CHAPTER FOURTEEN
SELFISH NEEDS

"What! You can't just leave Cor.." Anne exclaimed as tears started to pool in her blue eyes. "No one else in Avonlea cares for me.. other than Gilbert and Diana of course. And you're my bosom friend, my soul sister, my one and only platonic soulmate. I'll miss you so Cor, but Paris is a good opportunity an-"

Cora interrupted her with hug, both the girls sobbing until their eyes were tear stained and red. "I love you Anne."

"I love you too Cor.." Anne started out, but soon her blue eyes hardened. She pulled away from the hug hastily, Cora's eyes flickering back to Anne's ice cold ones.

"You can't just leave.. I would understand if you were forced but out of choice? You have a family here, you have me here, although I do hope that I am your family. You have grown up here your entire life and you're just gonna.. l-leave?" Anne screamed at her, voice cracking at the end.

"Anne I have to, I love Winifred and I don't want this life for the two of us anymore. I need change and I need it now." Cora explained frantically, "You can always visit and I'll always write to you.."

"BUT THATS THE PROBLEM! It's always 'Winifred this' 'Winifred that'! You're just going to give up your life for her? You're just going to give up your life because of her?" Anne retorted angrily.

"Anne, I love her.." Cora sobbed sadly.

"And I love Gilbert.. but do I talk about him all the time? Am I moving to PARIS because of him? No! I'm not.. Why are you so selfish?" Anne raged as her ice cold eyes glared at her.

"I'm selfish?!" Cora let out in disbelief, "You're the one who gets to show Gilbert how much you love him without being judged. You're not the different one, I am! If anyone knew about this I would probably be exiled by now.."

"You're the golden girl, the Blythe! No one would dare to say anything about you! Why do you care so much about what others think?!" Anne exclaimed back.

"It's funny how you're the one who's saying that, when you dyed your hair, or tried to, because you got judged for it! Who was the one holding you while you sobbed? Who was the one telling you that you were beautiful no matter what? Me." Cora breathed out as she said harshly.

Anne was silent for a few seconds, as she wiped her tears and simply said, "You're no friend of mine."

"And you never were." Cora said, as she ran away from the woods as quickly as she could. She gasped for air as she reached the stream, where Winifred was awaiting her return.

"Cora? Back already?" Winifred asked but soon hesitated when she realised how red her eyes were. "Gilbert didn't accept it, didn't he?"

"N-No he did.. it was Anne w-who didn't." Cora spluttered through sobs, and Winifred wrapped her arms around her, stroking her hair softly. "I'm sorry love, I really am. But give her some time, alright? It must be hard to adjust to change.. we all go through it."

"Alright Win.." Cora calmed down as the love of her life kissed her cheek softly.

"I need to get home now, I need to spend some more time with Gil.." Cora breathed out against Winifred's lips as she kissed her once more, this time softly and sweetly.

Gilbert was playing with Delphine when Cora stumbled into the house, dried tears on both of her soft cheeks.

Gilbert looked up from the baby in the cot and started, "Cor, what's wr-"

He was interrupted by her engulfing him in a bone crushing hug, him hugging back tightly.

"What happened?" He whispered against her shoulder as she shook her head slowly. "I just wanted to hug my big brother, is it really that hard to believe?"

"Yes." Gilbert muttered as Cora laughed lightly, hugging him even tighter than she already did.

And even though the world was upside down and her best friend detested her, Cora couldn't help but stifle a smile as she hugged her brother.

Gilbert was her lifeline.

this book is so close to finishing wtf- chile i cried while writing this- i'm sorry about the whole anne thing it's just how i imagine her to react to it.. no spoilers from me but things will turn around‼️anyways vote and comment if u enjoyed this chapter hehe
