They ran above deck, where Emerson froze in childlike fascination. The scene had so changed from the midnight black water she saw what seemed like only minutes before. Below her, as far as her eye could see, the ocean was glowing. Shining chartreuse and teal, bioluminescent jellyfish swam below, floating like tiny orbs. Gently bouncing off each other, weightless among the ocean. Turning the water around them glowing, too.

 Beautiful. Deadly, yes. But beautiful.

"Wow." Was all she could muster.

"Thought you might wanna see them." He said.

Once Emerson saw the scene, its shining, endless beauty, she was captivated. The mere thought of leaving this scene repulsed her.

"Can I stay here?" She said, quietly, still staring at the horizon.

"Course. I'd love you to."

She curled up under Spencer's arm. Just when Emerson was almost asleep, he kissed her softly. Em's eyes flickered open. She smiled faintly as Spencer pulled her onto the deck’s bench. They fell asleep in each other's arms.

 ...........................

Spencer woke with a start. It was just before dawn. He gazed at the girl beside him, peaceful in sleep. He sat up- something was wrong. He felt something stirring beneath the boat, and before he could rouse Em- IMPACT. She woke, face livid with fear. The boat began tipping, and the mast had gone down. Gulls resting on the mast took flight, fleeing from the scene around them. A scene of horror, a scene that could well be fatal.
