“ARABELLA!” My mother hollered at the top of her lungs.

“I KNOW YOU ARE NOT WEARING THAT!” She continued.

I tried hard to contain my laughter but I couldn’t. I soon realized that I had made the situation 100 times worse by laughing.

“What is it mother? I don’t see anything wrong.” I responded, acting confused as to why she was yelling. ANnoying her brought happiness to me in ways I couldn’t describe.

At this point everyone's mouths were practically on the ground. They were shocked as to the situation that just happened.

I looked at my mother and saw her face growing red with anger. It was almost as red as my dress.

“I can not believe you Arabella Langston!” She screamed.

“Mother you really have to elaborate because I have no idea what you are talking about.” I retorted. I knew she was going to get really frustrated at me once I said that but I had to get her riled up.

“Arabella! You come here this instant!” She seethed as she pointed down to an empty spot next to where she was standing.

“NO!” I yelled back.

My mother stormed up to me and grabbed my wrist with a significant amount of force. Her cold boney fingers were laced around my wrist and I could feel my skin under them beginning to burn. With a jolt of power I tugged back in disagreement.

She eventually let go and shook her head. I could tell from her eyes that she was done. I might have gone a bit too far.

“What was that all about.” Finn asked.

“It’s nothing!” I yelled back. I forgot I was talking to Finn. I could tell I had hurt his feelings from my sudden outburst as I saw his eyes defeat.

“I’m-I’m sorry. My mother was just being a total control freak and wants nothing more in her whole life for me to not actually be me! It’s just frustrating!” I said as a tear formed in my eye.

At this point it wasn’t about trying to annoy my mom but more that I wanted to be myself. I was sick of being controlled by my status and having a dress thrown on to impress people I didn’t even know.

“It’s ok-” Finn began.

“No it’s not, something is going to happen Finn. All I wanted was just to show her that she doesn’t have absolute control over everything I do. She’s mad, she’s really really mad.” I said as I fought back my tears. My mother and I have gotten in tumbles before but nothing like this. I could tell I had taken it too far when I saw my mothers reddened face staring at her peers that had shock written all over their faces.

I knew from a young age that my actions have consequences but I guess that didn’t fully sink in until just now.

As the ball started showing signs of ending. I clung to Finn. I didn’t want to leave his side because I really needed someone right now.

Finn also always knew what to say, especially when I needed comfort. Finn was someone that even when you didn’t think you needed him, he would end up being the best of help.

We sat down at the base of a flight of stairs near the back of the palace so nobody could find us.

“I can’t go back home. I just can’t.” I said. I looked up at him with my eyes almost completely red from tears.

“Don’t worry Arabella, everything will be fine. She won’t even remember what happened in the morning.” He quickly added.

I put my head on his shoulder, when I felt my phone buzz. I reached inside my bag and realized that my father had texted.
