We stood there for a bit waiting for the other to say something, but it felt like it was an eternity.
I decided to break the ice.
“So do you go to school around here?” I asked, trying to start a conversation. I wasn’t sure about anything that had to do with this man so I wasn’t sure what to ask.
“Yeah.” He started reaching into his back pocket and grabbing a small box.
“Ok cool. Do you like school so far.” I proceed. I wasn’t trying to be annoying but he interested me in a way that hadn’t before.
“It’s alright I suppose.” He replied now lighting another roll of paper from the box that he had emptied.
We stood there for a while longer just taking in the party. He was very short spoken and never made eye contact with me. I was trying to get to know who this boy was. He seemed to be someone that wasn’t interested in knowing me however.
“You come to parties often?” He asked after more silence drifted between us.
“No, not really.” I replied looking up at him again.
“Oh, so are you new or something?” Luca questioned meeting my eyes for the first time while talking.
“Yeah, I just moved to New York not that long ago.” I stated.
“Nice, and you like it i'm guessing.” He responded.
“Yeah, everyone is really cool and I'm really starting to love the city.” I exclaimed. The excitement of the last words came out more than I had planned.
He smiled. I blushed as soon as he did.
“Well maybe I could show you around, only if you're down.” Luca said before taking a sip of the red cup in his hand.
“Yeah that would be fun.” I returned. I wasn’t sure if I would take him up on the offer.
We both stood there in the corner, waiting yet again for the other person to talk. Talking to him seemed different than talking with other people in my life. The constant quiet that drifted between us wasn’t familiar to me.
“Do you want something to drink?” I asked, noticing his cup was empty.
“Yeah sure, I don't care what.” Luca stated handing me his empty cup.
“Ok I’ll be right back then.” I said as I walked off. I needed some time to clear my head and think about the conversation I had just had. I had barely talked to him and I was already getting a range of emotions fluttering through me.
He wasn’t as bad as I had expected. TJ was right he does seem like your typical bad boy, but it is kind of interesting.
When I came back with the drinks I noticed that he had somehow gotten more cigarettes from somewhere.
“Hey, here is your drink.” I stated as I handed him the red solo cup. I wasn’t sure what I had poured into it but I grabbed a bottle off the counter and filled the cup.
“Thanks.” He replied plainly, grabbing the cup that was being held out for him.
We continued to stand there quiet further away from Katie and everyone else. But, I liked it.
