No matter what age he was, Gerard was a toddler at heart. He liked bright colors and the rain, and most importantly, frogs. That's where the teenager was today: frog hunting in the pond behind his house with his best friend Frank.
"Do you usually get frogs in here?" Frank asked.
"It's a mix of frogs and toads. I mean...the toads don't go in the water, but you know what I mean." Gerard stepped into the pond, thanking god that his rain boots did their job.
"I don't see any frogs."
"You never see any frogs." Gerard crouched and grabbed at something. "Dammit- come here!"
"Want the jar?"
"Not yet, that'll fill with rocks." Gerard caught the frog. "Hell yeah! Fill that jar up, Frankie."
Frank filled the jar about halfway with water and held it open for Gerard to put the frog in. "He's adorable."
"He is, but I don't know if frogs can stay fully submerged in water, so let's get him to your tank." Frank screwed the lid (which they had poked holes in) onto the jar and tilted it sideways so the frog had a place to sit. "What are you gonna name him?"
"Bowie."
Frank smiled and followed Gerard into his house. "Of course you are."
Gerard's room was much warmer than outside. Frank shuddered so hard he almost dropped the jar. Thankfully, he didn't, and they were able to safely transfer the frog to Gerard's tank, which was outfitted with all sorts of rocks and leaves, and, most importantly, water.
Frank eased Bowie the frog into the tank. "There we go."
"New home!" Gerard smiled and tackled Frank onto the bed. "Now I need to nap."
"You've been awake for three hours."
"And I only slept for four, Frank, let me have this." Gerard closed his eyes and snuggled into Frank's chest.
"What if Bowie's hungry?"
"I'll feed him later."
Frank smiled as Gerard's gentle snoring filled the room. He rolled him gently off his chest, trying to not wake him up, and tucked him into bed. He kissed his forehead, then left the room.

Frank wasn't there when Gerard woke up the next morning. He could hear Bowie croaking in his tank, so he dumped a few flies he'd caught into the tank.
Gerard yawned and rubbed his eyes. He checked the house, making sure that Frank wasn't there, then sat in the chair next to Bowie's tank. "You know Frank. He helped me catch you. We've been friends for years, and I'm really glad about that. There's been times where he's been my only friend. And I'm afraid to lose him. I can't tell him."
Bowie croaked.
"That I'm in love with him," Gerard clarified. "At least, I think I am. I've never been in love before, but this is what it feels like, right? Like, a warm glow whenever you see them?"
Bowie didn't say anything, so Gerard sighed. "You're right. I shouldn't say anything. I don't wanna lose him. I know he's gay, but, like..."
Gerard bit his lip. "I don't know what to do."

Gerard ended up talking to his frog practically every day as he fed him. It was his replacement for a therapist.
That day was his birthday, and Frank was coming over for a sleepover. They were gonna watch horror movies, make cake, and play in the rain.
"Tonight could be my chance," Gerard said, gently shaking a few flies into the tank and putting the cover on so they wouldn't escape. "I could tell him that I love him. My only worry is how he'll react. He hasn't shown any signs that he likes me back. We've been cuddling and sharing a bed since we were little, so it's hard to tell. Just..." Gerard sighed. "Why couldn't I have fallen for someone other than Frank?"
"Enjoying your soul searching?"
Gerard jumped so hard he fell off his chair and hit his head on the desk. "Fuck!"
"Shit!" Frank put the cupcake he was holding down and ran over to Gerard. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, but...how much of that did you hear?"
"Uh...all of it."
Gerard's cheeks went scarlet. "Oh."
Frank cupped the back of his neck and leaned over him. "Can I kiss you?"
"Wait...why?"
"Because I'm in love with you too, dumbass."
Gerard blinked and pulled Frank down to kiss him. Their lips slid together softly, and then they pulled apart, both panting a little bit.
"Happy birthday," Frank whispered.
