Chapter 6

One day, mid- January I was in science class when I got a text. We're not really allowed to text in class but my teacher is really old and doesn't care anymore. I decided to check it. It was from Percy.

I think Piper is on to us bc this morning I heard her on the phone with Reyna telling her that she thinks I have a girlfriend.

Oh crap. What did you do? I responded.

Nothing just walked away.

Oh good.

What was I gonna tell Piper?

After school, I rushed to the change room where Piper would be getting changed for cheerleading.

"Hey, Rey," I said to Reyna Ramíerz-Arellano, "Have you seen Piper?" I added.

"No, she's not here yet." She reported.

"Oh, thanks," I said as I left the girls' room.

I ran across the school to where Piper has French as the last class on Tuesdays. I looked inside and noticed she was talking to her teacher with a half a dozen other students.

"These permission slips allow you to go starting in February all the way until May," I over heard the teacher say.

Is Piper going somewhere? I thought. An exchange program maybe? I bet it's France. But if she goes I won't have a best friend. But I will have Percy. Maybe this is a good thing.

I waited for about two more minutes before I Piper was done.

"Gah! Beth what are you doing here?" She said as she walked out the door, obviously I scared the crap out of her.

"I was waiting for you," I responded, "Where are you going in February?" I continued.

"Paris," she said.

"What? Wow that's awesome!" I exclaimed, "You're going right?"

"I don't know," she said.

"Why? This is a once-in-a-lifetime offer!" You have to go!" I encouraged.

"I don't know," she repeated.

"What do you mean 'I don't know'?"

"I just don't know, Beth."

"Okay well I was wondering if you wanted to go to the beach with me this afternoon," but clearly you don't want to," I said as I walked away.
