The day couldn’t get any slower. All I could think about was the escape. I was barely paying attention to whatever we were learning. Despite with what happened yesterday Zack was still mouthing the words rather than saying them. There was one time when the teacher was going to make him only say the words, but lucky for him he was saved by the bell when it went for lunch.
Kevin gave out the address to his secret hideout to the people who were going to join our team. We didn’t want to act suspicious as we all left the jail once school was over, going out in small groups and going to the address a few minutes after the other, making sure the Japanese weren’t nearby.
I walked down the street with Zack and Nelly, nervous about this whole thing. I still played scenarios in my head about what would happen if the Japanese was to catch us. It was horrifying to see the pictures in my head playing over and over again.
We reached the address. It was a three storey apartment building. We glanced around to see if any soldiers were around. There were none. We entered the building where the glass on the front door was smashed. Walking the stairs to the third level, we found Kevin’s secret hiding place.
There was no door to the apartment. Inside there were papers scattered around the room and few picture frames smashed on the ground or where crooked on the walls. As I looked around the lounge room I realise that it was Kevin’s apartment, spotting a picture of him posing in front of a red car that was sitting on the coffee table. To tell you the truth it felt totally weird being inside someone’s house after not being able to enter one for twenty one days.
Kevin was nowhere to be seen. Nelly called out to him and he appeared from the kitchen.
“Hey, sorry for the mess,” he said. “I haven’t really cleaned most of the stuff since the Japanese invaded the place.”
“It’s alright, Kevin,” Nelly replied. “We aren’t complaining.”
“Take a seat. I will be with you guys in a sec. I’m just putting together some snacks.”
“Would you like any help?” Nelly offered.
“I’m right, thanks.” Kevin disappeared in the kitchen.
Zack, Nelly and I stood there for a moment. We heard footsteps and we turned to see Sophie and Sarah walking into the room.
“Hey, we aren’t late?” Sarah asked.
“No, you’re just in time,” I told them. “We are still waiting on a few people.”
Sophie and Sarah sat down on the couch together. I watched them closely. They reminded me when I was seventeen. So innocent and dreaming about what the future lay ahead. Their laughs felt like a cover up from the miserable life that we all now had. I thought of how we were going to fight back to take what was previously ours and how our lives were going to be a difference. We wouldn’t have to live in misery. Well, I guess there will be times when we will do live miserable lives, but at least we will have freedom. We don’t have to worry about anyone controlling our lives.
I stepped into the kitchen where Kevin was at a counter, putting some Jatz crackers on a plate and some cheese. He looked up at me.
“Are you mad at me after what happened yesterday with me wanting to back out of all of this?” I asked him.
He shook his head. “I may have been mad yesterday, but not today. Nelly explained it all to me. I can kind of understand why you would back out of this. It’s not an easy responsibly to take on, you know.”
“I just want things to go back the way they used to.”
“I do too and by the end of the day we will be known as heroes.”
