Day thirty one and today was the day we were going to invade our town. During breakfast we went over our plans again before heading underground. I was a little tired from staying up half of the night, but I didn’t let that get in the way of anything. I was confident that everything was going to turnout well.
I hated walking through the water main and wished we were wearing sneakers. It was uncomfortable walking with wet socks.
We walked through the tunnels until we reached the street Kevin used to live in. We figured we will get out here since we knew there wouldn’t be a lot of soldiers in that area. Kevin chose to climb the ladder to make sure we could get out safety on the street. Maddison told us that as soon as Kevin informs us that it was safe, she wanted us to hid inside the building until we were all out and didn’t look suspicious when any soldiers come by.
The coast was clear and we followed Kevin out one by one. Kevin continued to keep an eye on everything to make sure no soldiers was to see us. We headed inside the building.
Once inside, Maddison addressed us with everything that she wanted to do. We knew it was going to be difficult to walk down the street holding weapons. We would be shot on the spot if we were caught. She suggested we try to hide them under our jackets the best we could, but I didn’t see how we could do that. I mean, how can you hide a machine gun or any of the other weapons we have hiding under our jackets without even looking suspicious.
Splitting up in groups, we walked down the street. Maddison wanted us to meet at some apartment near the jail. She didn’t want us to shout, but she wanted to cause an explosion to show the Japanese that even if they want to take everything over, we aren’t going to let them.
I felt so unsafe walking down the street even though I had Nelly, Kevin, Keith and Zack with me. Every time I saw one of the soldiers I was afraid to make any eye contact with them.
“We should maybe go through an alley way or something,” Kevin so its best we go down the alley way.”
“What if they are waiting for us in the alley?” Keith asked.
“They won’t. Now come on.”
We didn’t argue. We followed Kevin into the alley, glancing around us to make sure no one was around. Half of me was afraid that a soldier may be hiding in the alley way and shoot us all, but there’s no one around.
Nelly suddenly screamed. We all turn to her to see what was wrong. My immediately thought that she spotted one of the soldiers, but I couldn’t see anyone around except us. I looked down at the ground and saw what my friend was screaming about. A brown rat ran across the ground to the other side, disappearing behind bags of garage. Forgetting about the Japanese, I screamed.
Our screams were cut off as Kevin cupped his hand around Nelly’s mouth, and someone did the same to me. I wasn’t sure why, but I think it was Zack’s hand.
“What are you guys doing?” Kevin asked us. “Are you crazy? You are going to blow our cover.”
Nelly removed Kevin’s hand from her mouth. She swirled around to face him. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scream. I just saw the rat and I couldn’t help but scream. Please don’t hate me.”
Kevin stared at her and then peeked over at me before turning back to Nelly, decided whether or not if he was going to forgive us or not. He was about to open his mouth to say something when we heard voices coming from the street.
Grabbing Nelly, Kevin quickly hid behind a bin, holding her tightly around her waist. Zack pulled me over to them as well with Kevin right behind us. Zack still had his hand over my mouth. I wasn’t sure why. It wasn’t like I was going to scream again.
