“Abigail, do you want to take a walk with me?” Nelly asked me later.

I agreed to. It was quiet outside and no helicopters were flying over us so we knew it was safe to go outside, although we still had to be careful not to come across any soldiers. They could be hiding outside waiting for us to emerge from our hiding place. But I don’t think they had figured out where we are just yet.

“Are you sure you will be alright to walk?” I asked her as we step outside, concerning about her leg.

“I will be alright,” Nelly replied. “Besides, I really feel like chocolate right now and I’m going to go to the shops even if it kills me. Anyway, my leg huts a little, but I will be alright.”

I laughed. Chocolate. God I miss chocolate. “You’re such a chocolateholic.”

“You can be a chocolateholic at times too.”

“True.”

“Besides, chocolate is what we need right now and it will make us feel better after what happened.”

Nelly was right. Chocolate is what we needed right now. It has been forty three days since we last had chocolate and it has also been the longest I went without it. It may not be able to bring back my brother, but at least it will make me feel better. Chocolate fixes everything. It’s the kind of friend you can always count on, even though it’s not exactly good for your waist line, but who cares?

We walked slowly down the street since Nelly couldn’t walk fast. Everything around us was quiet and so far there was no sign of any soldiers roaming about. Some grey clouds were starting to roll in and it looked like it might rain soon.

“Wouldn’t it be cool if it rain?” Nelly said. “It hasn’t rain for ages.”

“I know. I think the last time it rain it was the middle of the night.”

“I don’t like the rain so much, but wouldn’t it be cool if a flood happened and it washes away the soldiers?”

I laughed. “That would be cool but that’s never going to happen and you know it. Lynnville has never had a flood.”

“Well, there could always be a first.”

“That would be the day.”

We walked into the local chemist, walking in to see if there was any chocolate inside. The sweets section was right near the entrance. We headed over to it. I grabbed a Cherry Ripe while Nelly grabbed a Mars Bar. We sat behind the counter so we were out of view from any soldiers walking by in the street.

“I think I’m going to die in heaven now,” Nelly said as she unwrap her chocolate bar, taking a bite of it. I did the same for me. “So, um, are you okay about what happened to Jamie?”

I stared at the Cherry Ripe in my hand that I had bitten into. Suddenly I didn’t feel like eating it. The image of my brother being shot appeared in my head. “I’m okay.”

“I’m here if you want to talk about it. It’s kind of one of the reasons I got you to come so we could talk without the other’s around.”

“I thought you wanted chocolate.”

“I did. So do you want to talk? I knew you might want to talk to Sophie about it, but if there’s something you don’t want to talk to her about, you can talk to me.”

“Maybe I could talk about it some other time. I don’t feel like talking about it right now. If I do, I might not be able to stop crying.”

Nelly understood how I felt.
