We split up in groups, wondering around the town. Maddison and Scott decided to go check in the water main to make sure she wasn’t down there. Nelly and I went together, not exactly sure where we should be looking. There were a million places Katelynn could be and our only hope is that the Japanese hasn’t found her.
Where would you look for somebody who sleepwalks?
“What’s the best place to look?” Nelly asked me.
“I don’t know,” I said, straining my brain to think where she might be. “In movies sleepwalkers often end up in places you at least expect them to be.”
“Well, hopefully she is not anywhere near the soldiers.”
We continued walking. There were a couple of times we had to hide because soldiers would drive past us in their jeeps. In my head I kept playing a conservation over and over in my head as I try and figure out what I’m going to say to Katelynn when we find her. I’m not sure if I should be mad at her. It’s not her fault for sleepwalking, is it? Is there a way to prevent a person from sleepwalking?
What seemed like forever, Nelly and I soon found Katelynn walking out of the shops, carrying a plastic bag in her hands. We ran over to her.
“Katelynn, are you okay?” I asked her.
Katelynn just looked at us and wondered why we were so worried. She acted like she didn’t even care, like she didn’t even know that she had put our lives, as well as her own for being out here. Anything could have happened to her.
“Of course I’m okay,” she answered. “Why wouldn’t I be okay?”
“You were missing, Katelynn,” Nelly reminded her. “You worried everyone of what might have happened to you when you walked out of the building this morning and not telling anyone where you went. The Japanese could have found you.”
“Especially if you were sleepwalking,” I added. “You could have done something you wouldn’t even know you did.”
“Just relax you two,” Katelynn told us both. “I only went to the store to get some make up. I thought I could get back in time but I guess I got distracted.”
“So you weren’t sleepwalking? You just went to buy make up?”
Katelynn laughed. “Sleepwalk? Why would you think I was sleepwalking?”
“Because you once told me that you do. So I thought that’s what you might be doing since you weren’t there when we woke up.”
She smirked. “No, I wasn’t sleepwalking. I told you I was getting make up. I look terrible at
the moment and I really need to cover my face up. You two should use some too.”
I felt humiliated for saying that Katelynn had disappeared because she was sleepwalking. And because of what I said that she might have done, I have now left everyone at risk for searching for her. Okay, maybe it wasn’t my fault exactly but Katelynn is the one that lead us out here. We’re putting our lives at risk only because she wanted make up.
Anger built up inside of me and I had to try and hold it in. Starting a fight right here could trigger attention from the Japanese and they could sneak up to us without knowing. I glanced over at Nelly and could see it in her eyes that she wanted to kill Katelynn as much as I wanted to do it. I had to hold her back, telling her that she wasn’t worth punching over.
Katelynn smirked. “Yes, Nelly. It’s not worth punching me. Now excuse me, I need to get back to the hide out so I can try out this new makeup.”
She pushed past us and just as she did, a gun shot went off, hitting Katelynn. I’m not sure exactly where the bullet hit her, but she collapsed on the ground.
