It took us forty eight days to defeat the Japanese. It then took another fifty two days to pick up our lives and go back to our normal life. Buy the hundredth day we are completely free from the Japanese. The left over soldiers had no idea what to do without their leader.
I don’t want to be called a hero or even be known as one. I still disliked the idea about war. But it felt good to know that I helped fight the Japanese so we could be free again.
No one in the town is the same after what happened and no one talks about it. If we talk about it, we break down into tears. Every night I wake up hearing my mother cry about Jamie. Out of everyone in my family I feel like my mother is worse affected.
Zack lives with my family. Scott died in his arms that night. For awhile he went back to being silent and refused to speak. I hated seeing him the way he is. From time to time he says a few words, but most of the time he goes back to being silent.
I see most of our team mates from time to time, but it’s mostly Nelly and Kevin that I see more. None of us speak about what happened, but occasionally Nelly does tell me how she feels and I sit there listening, telling her what’s on my mind as well.
Maddison soon leaves Lynnville once we get the town back in order. She wouldn’t tell us where she was going or why she was leaving. Perhaps she was leaving to avoid the memories. I don’t blame her for leaving because of that. If I could, I would leave too. I’m not sure where I would go. But I can’t leave. I can’t leave without my family or friends. They need me as much as I needed them.
Our town builds a memorial at the local park, listing the people who have been killed. Over a hundred people or more were killed. Almost every night people will come by and light up candles for their love ones. Seeing the names on the memorial makes me feel fortunate that I’m still standing. I could have been killed, but I wasn’t. I was one of the lucky ones.
And I was the one of the people who helped saved our country.
