Once settle inside, I grabbed the first aide from the bathroom and then sat Sarah down to fix up the gash on her head. The blood on her forehead had dried. I cleaned it up for her. The good thing was it wasn’t a deep cut and it didn’t need stitches.

For the rest of the day we had to stay indoors. If we did we had to be extra careful. Helicopters kept flying around us. I feared a little bit of what if the soldiers found us, invading very building until they find us. My biggest fear was what if they decided to drop a bomb on us to save time searching for us. But at the same time they didn’t know where we were and what town we were coming from.

Maddison was hard at work trying to work out what our next move could be. She was scribbling on notepads of whatever her plans were going to be before she told us what we were going to do. Jeremy was still talking about how awesome our battle was. As for Nelly, she was pretty quiet after Kevin saved her life. I sat with her on the couch, replaying the events of today in my head and thinking of what lay ahead. I did try to talk to Nelly but she too seemed to be lost in her own thoughts to answer. I didn’t hassle her to speak because I knew when she was ready she will tell me what was on her mind.

After awhile I had to get off the couch and helped Katelynn prepared something for dinner. I didn’t want to help her, but it was one of Maddison’s orders. She had everyone doing different jobs. Even if we didn’t like the other person, she wanted us to learn to work together since that’s what we will end up doing when we fight back against the Japanese. We didn’t have to make a big fancy dinner, which was good because I wasn’t much of a cook.

Katelynn stood at the stove boiling the noodles that we decided to cooked along with some chicken, while I chopped up some vegetables to go along with the meal. Once I chopped them up I placed them into a pot and let them boil. While it was on the stove I went to check on Nelly to see if she was alright. She was still sitting on the couch, watching the rest of the group play a game of poker that Keith ended up finding in the apartment. Maddison was sitting at a table still scribbling on her notepad. I was going to go join Nelly when Kevin came out from the bathroom and sat down beside Nelly.

“Abigail, could you please drain the noodles for me?” Katelynn asked me, but I ignored her.

I remained at the door frame and watched Kevin and Nelly. They were talking softly to each other so I wasn’t really sure what they were talking about. The group that was playing poker were being noisy and half of me wanted to tell them to shut up so I could listen to the two of them talk. Since we had arrived back to the apartment after the stun we pulled in Lynnville, Nelly hadn’t smile or spoken a word to anyone since she was almost killed. But as she talked to Kevin, she had this smile that never left her face.

“Hey, are you listening to me?” Katelynn grabbed my shoulder and made me turn to face her.

“Oh, sorry. I didn’t hear you,” I lied. I didn’t want to tell her the truth of what I was really doing. She never really liked Nelly for some reason.

I obeyed her without getting into an argument. I strained the noodles and then placed it into a large bowl. I checked on the vegetables before adding them into the bowl as well. When the chicken was ready, Katelynn mixed it in with the noodles. We served it into smaller bowls for everyone and then called them to come eat.

I put together one for Maddison who was still sitting at the table, scribbling her ideas down. I stood behind her and glanced over her shoulder at her notes. They were full of diagrams of plans she had in her head. I wonder when she will share the ideas with us.

Grabbing my own bowl, I sat down beside Nelly. It was good to eat something other than rice all the time.

“So, I saw Kevin talking to you,” I said to her. “What were you guys talking about?”
