16.

My mother and I settled down for a bit after we’ve arrived. I knew I shouldn’t have asked her this pretty serious question when she’s mentally and emotionally tired after work. But the way she insisted me on telling her about what was on my mind made me emotional. We finally got time to do our talk in the couch after a few moment.

“Luke, what do you want to talk about?” She smiled at me, convincing that I could talk about everything to her.

“Actually this is a quite sensitive topic,” I cleared my throat to take away my nerves. “Mum, I just met Mr. Singleton at the coffee shop when I was waiting for you. In summary, he saw Dad’s picture inside my wallet because of my clumsiness. Then, he told me what Dad caused to his family 12 years ago. Mum, can you tell me what actually happened here?”

“Lucas, I’m sorry. I’m sorry for not telling you about this earlier. I planned to tell you when you’re mature enough to handle this kind of situation your Dad had put us through with the Singletons.”

“So you’re saying I’m not mature enough to know about this?! If you already know that Dad has ever ruined Mr. Singleton’s career why would we be friend with his family? Why didn’t Mr. Singleton notice that we are actually ‘the Hemmings’ he hates for the rest of his life?! Mother, I want the truth!” I knew this sounds so impolite to insist your Mother, forcing her to explain the situation, but I couldn’t help it when someone is hiding something from me.

“Luke, calm yourself down, please. I’m going to explain everything to you.” My Mum said as she straighten her sitting position. “Luke, what your Dad did to Mr. Singleton was a huge mistake. Since then, he never talked to Mr. Singleton anymore. But when your Dad was in the hospital after that car accident, one of the last thing he said before he died was we owe the Singleton, a lot. He said we have to take care, protect their family as much as we could. Since then, I found out why we moved to this house because it’s close to the Singleton’s new house. We’ve only been in this house for 6 months when he died, also a few months after Hazel’s brother died. Then somehow, Mrs. Singleton managed to get divorced of her husband because she was depressed.”

“Mum, how Mr. Singleton could not know it was us ‘the Hemmings’?”

“Because we are not the only Hemmings in this world okay? And Mr. Singleton was a very generous and positive person, if you know what I mean by that. I don’t even know why your Dad did that to him. And they needed a therapist that time, so I purposefully offered myself to help them with Mrs. Singleton’s friend help.” She breathed in to calm herself down. “That is why I made you a math tutor for Hazel.”

“Mum, I’m sorry I didn’t know anything about it.” I hugged her, wrapping her warm body up in my arms while she was kissing my head.

I felt bad about everything. But Mr. Singleton had already found out about me; that Hemmings descendant he hates for the rest of his life. I knew if I keep hang out with Hazel, this would not be good for any of us; it would get even worse eventually. Hazel and I couldn’t work anything up, even if we would only end up being just a friend, besides she has a boyfriend.

I knew that these whole falling for Hazel thing was a huge mistake. I should have never fallen in love with her. I knew I should have never let her came into my life without any warning, by just walking passed me at school didn’t even notice I was there, starring at her  every time, with her beautiful hand intertwined with that douchebag’s; sitting in class all by herself, being all smart, witty and stuffs . That might sounds stupid but it happened to me. It was all a stupid mistake.
