Luke’s POV

Waking up to reality sucks, especially when the reality is the worst thing in your life. I wanted to live the dream, especially with Hazel Singleton. I rolled out of the bed checked my phone and it was still 6 am in the morning, why did I wake up so early? There were also a few text messages from Hazel. I was afraid I’ve gotten her into troubles, I honestly felt bad for her. I should keep her out of trouble, but instead I am the actual trouble for her.

“Luke”

“Lucas”

“Answer me”

“Hemmings are you asleep?”

“Alright then, I hope you see this when you woke up. I didn’t get caught last night, I told my Dad I was at the public library and I was so drowned in the books that I forgot it was already late. He believed it. I told him I reread To Kill a Mockingbird and then we had a very long conversation about it. Thanks for yesterday, Luke. –Hazel”

“That’s a nice excuse, but you cannot use the excuse for the second or the third time. See you at school, well, hopefully. –Luke”

Half an hour later, she replied.

“I’m fine, really. There will be a second time? I can’t wait! –Hazel”

“But I guess not today because I have to pick my Mum up from her office after school. I’m sorry –Luke”

School is finally over. All the seniors were busy with their last senior activities like graduations; including me. I put all the stuffs in my locker in my bag, cleaning the locker that has been mine for the last few years of High School. I didn’t even have a bravery to look at Hazel Singleton after yesterday. It was all awkward; the kiss and everything, until she came up to me with a full loaded handbag.

“Hi genius, I see you don’t have much stuffs there besides books,” He grinned at me as if we didn’t do anything wrong yesterday.

“And you got a lot of stuffs there, Singleton. Hope you brought your car so you don’t have to walk with that heavy handbag all the way home or be in the bus with those puffy handbag.” I tried to joke but didn’t even bother to look at her. I didn’t have such guts to even stare at her beautiful eyes. It would make me sick, thinking about how I wouldn’t be able to wait for her to break up or even ask her out on a proper date or even stay with her.

“Don’t worry, I drove to school this morning.” She said. “By the way, Luke, congratulations for the Oxford, you deserve it, you know.…” She stopped for a little and fiddled a small strand at the end of her hair like she always does when she’s nervous. Apparently, my mother had told her about it. “Anyway, we should have a celeb…” She couldn’t even finish her words because someone suddenly called her name from the distance. It was her boyfriend, I supposed. “I’m sorry, I have to go. But I’m looking forward to seeing you around again,” She smiled before she turned around and went to her boyfriend. Unexpectedly, Patrick came up to Hazel and put his arms around her shoulder so I turned around after I shut my locker off. Hoping he didn’t even see my face. Muttering a few profanities to her boyfriend wouldn’t make things change. So, I walked away and made my way to my car to put all of these stuffs inside.

I drove to the city, to the building where my Mum works. When I arrived, she hadn’t got out of her office yet, so I decided to wait for her in the coffee shop next to her office. I stood in line to get myself a drink. When I was about a person behind the counter, suddenly the middle-aged man who stood behind me pat my shoulder.
