Cory Jenkins sat at the interrogation table behind the one-way mirror, twiddling his thumbs and staring up at the bright neon lights that supplied the room with an essence of the day. His expensive leather shoes tapped against the stone floor a total of two times per second. The sound echoed through the room and the tiny speaker at the other side of the mirror.
Skylar watched as he grew more and more hostile, alone in the darkened room. She had his file in her hands, the file Garcia had finally finished printing for her. His past had shaped him into the man he was. A past that would've easily made the front page of the profile of a serial killer.
The door opened. Emily stepped in. "What have you got?" She asked. She had helped Penelope get the system back on and running, that's why Skylar had decided to join them instead of staying behind with JJ, Morgan, Spencer and her father. It gave her fresh air to breathe — to be away from Michael for once was surely a blessing — but she was afraid of what he talked about without her there. Michael's filter for the words he spoke often found itself under repair.
"His wife divorced him ten years ago," Skylar explained. "They have a daughter whom he lost custody for in a cruel battle that went to court. Ever since then, there is almost no record of him. He lives in an apartment ten minutes from campus, his colleagues barely know him, the classes he teaches have a high statistic for failure. I mean, a lot of students described him as angry at his last evaluation. Ever since the divorce, he went completely off the rails."
"And the research material in the lab?" Emily asked.
"He focused on researching viruses and bacteria. He's actually quite famous for it." She handed her the file.
"Hm. I see. Have you talked to him yet?"
"No, and even if I did, I don't think he would talk much."
"Well, Morgan found missing pieces in Timothy Franklin's research reports that have been ripped out or shredded or both. However, they weren't able to find the missing pieces in his office. They're gone."
"So I was right, he broke into the lab and made sure no one found out about this. Obviously, he wasn't very smart about it, but we still need to find the missing evidence to form a case."
Emily handed her the tablet. She scrolled through the several pictures Derek had sent. Timothy had documented everything down to the smallest detail. The pages weren't complete, however, and Skylar knew exactly why.
She slowly shook her head. "Timothy died for that," she whispered. "He died because he told the truth and Cory Jenkins knew that it would put him behind bars, so he planted the evidence and Strauss believed it. How stupid!" Angrily, she shut the cover on Emily's tablet and shoved it back to her.
"You know, I'm usually the last one to disagree when it comes to hating on that heartless bitch, but Strauss probably just wanted to make sure-" she said.
