Strange things began happening before the actual fight.
Sure, things had been weird ever since the ground opened up, and before that were smoking adults (not in that sense) on school grounds and disappearing scrolls. I had half a mind to go back home and curl up into the security and comfort of my two-day-owned bed.
"Granny," I ventured.
"Don't call me that."
"Do my eyes deceive me, or..."
...Everyone in the place had some variation of animal ears and a tail. Perhaps we had wandered off into some animal-themed concert, or maybe me and Tsunade hadn't gotten the memo that this was actually some sort of secret costume closet (basement) party. I pictured a faint scenario in my head;
{make sure to come in animal ears and tails! Party policy!"
RSVP: xxx-we're all wild here-xxx}written on an invitation.
...yeah, right. And this was all some sort of secret society of hybrid-animal people.
"WELCOME, YOUNG HYBRIDS OF KONOHA!!"
I choked on air.
"Gran!! What is this?!"
"This, little brat, is Konoha's Shishi no Tatakai."
"Shishi no...what?"
"Shishi no Tatakai. Battle of Beasts. It's a long held tradition for this school."
More yells chorused from the crowd, and some guys were lifting each other up like in the lion king.
"Seems festive..." I said, glancing towards the group of guys in question. They all had letters painted onto their bare stomachs, spelling "GROWL".
The "battle of beasts" had definitely taken off, with two students situated in the ring. They were about to start, so I tuned in.
"For today's first battle, let's have a round of applause for Kiba Inuzuka!" The crowd roared for the first contestant.
"Kiba?!" I said, a little too loudly.
Surely enough, the first friend I had made today was standing in the ring, with a strikingly dog-like appearance.
He wore a confident smile, his fangs seemingly more animalistic now than I remembered them to be.
At least a million thoughts raced through my head, and I felt dizzy. I just saw Kiba. He was heading off to lunch. He has ears now. And a tail.
Wasn't it still sometime during the lunch hour? So why...?
"Take a seat, Uzumaki." Tsunade interjected my thoughts.
Only then did I notice I was standing, hands gripping the railing in front of me. I did as I was told silently, and resumed watching the events unfold.
"And for our next challenger, a transfer coming from Suna, please welcome Kankuro of the sand!"
"The sand?" I cocked my head to the side.
The boy who walked out was dressed in all black, or grey, I couldn't exactly tell in the lighting. He wore purple face paint and had strapped to his side a large wooden box. Ears protruded from under his hood, and you could see a long, fuzzy-looking striped tail coming from a hole in his jumper.
"Suna is our neighbouring city in the land of fire." But Tsunade's response fell on deaf ears.
I felt like I was being left out of the biggest inside joke yet.
Why am I here? Why did the announcer lady call them hybrids? What exactly is this place?
"That's what I'm about to show you." Tsunade's line from earlier resurfaced in my mind.
I took notice of the arena once more as a platform rose from the ground. On it stood a young woman with spiky purple hair and a wild grin. She wore fishnets and a long beige jacket, and was speaking into a microphone at her ear.
"Round one for today's battle starts in...5!"
I watched as the guys from before were now singing and doing the wave.
"4!"
"3!"
The crowd was deafening.
"2!"
"Watch closely, little brat."
"1!"
The crowd's energy level spiked, as the battle was set off.
"FIGHT!"
