chapter xii.

1959

EVELYN WALKED SWIFTLY ALONG THE LONG CORRIDOR. Her heart was racing as she thought of what was about to happen, what had to happen. She knew her task, she knew what would happen if she didn't do it. Ultimately, she had no choice.

No one really took noticed of her as she made her way around the compound; of course, however, they did know who she was with the number of times she had been in here, alongside the founders, people were bound to know who she was.

Sometimes it surprised her how little any of the SHIELD workers cared about her being here, they didn't even take a second glance when she passed them.

Each of their stares made the girl feel even sicker. God how she wanted to just run home and pretend like none of this was supposed to happen. She hadn't even completed her task and she was already feeling guilty.

Why did it have to happen? Why did she have to do this? She just wanted a normal, happy life and this.. this was the farthest thing from normal nor was it happy.

She was reaching to where she was supposed to be, the guilt rising to her throat making it dry. Her heart was pounding in her chest with so much fear. When she does this, there will be no going back, none whatsoever.

Eventually, Evelyn made it to where she was supposed to be, as much as it pained her to do so. Slowly, she pulled out a keycard from her pocket, lifting it towards the keypad and-

"-Evie, hey!" The Bell girl jumped in her place, letting out a small yelp. Immediately, she dropped the keycard from her hand, the small piece of card landing on the ground.

She turned on her heel towards the sound of the familiar voice, internally letting out a groan at who it was. "Hi, Stark," she said, her voice cracking a little bit due to her nerves.

Evelyn was quite close to Howard, the two of them sharing similar personalities and them both being very confident about themselves. He was one of the first people that Evie had met when Winnie introduced her to SHIELD.

However, sometimes he would get on her nerves, especially when the majority of the time he was hitting on her and trying to get in her pants. She couldn't deny that Howard was a very handsome man but she vowed to herself that she wouldn't start any romantic relationships with anyone.

"I didn't know you were coming in today," Howard pointed out as he caught up with her. His eyes darted down towards her keycard, bending down to grab it for her. "It seems you dropped this," he winked before handing it over to her.

Evie gave him a weary smile, taking the card. "It seems I have. Thank you."

"So why you going in there?" he asked when he noticed what room she was trying to go into. "If you're looking for White, she's not in today."

His question took her off guard slightly even though she expected him to ask her it. Quick, Evelyn, think! "I'm actually not looking for Winnie, I was- I was looking for you!" she answered, a little bit too enthusiastic.

"Looking for me?"

God how she wanted to punch that sly smirk off of his face. "Yes, indeed I was. Someone said that you would be in here so.. here I am," she lied.

Lying was something that she was taught to do at a very young age, she had to be able to it well, well enough to even convince the smartest man alive. For if she didn't there would always be the possibility that she would get caught.
