chapter vii.

2014

BEFORE THEY KNEW IT, the three of them stole a car and were heading to New Jersey. Winnie sat in the back of the car, spread out along the backseat, Natasha was in the passenger-seat, aka Shotgun, with her feet on the dashboard and Steve in the driver's seat.

They rode in pretty much silence, mostly because Winnie was almost passed out in the back due to the lack of sleep she had had over the past two-to-three days. She had suggested that they go to a nearby gas station for her to get some caffeine in her but the other two didn't want to stop and told her to just sleep instead.

So that's what she did. Whilst she slept, Natasha and Steve made small talk between themselves.

"Where did Captain America learn to steal a car?" she taunted.

"Nazi Germany," Steve said bluntly as Natasha let out a little 'hm' noise. "And we're borrowing. Take your feet off the dash."

With a smirk on her face, the Romanoff girl obliged to Steve's orders and slowly took her feet off, sitting up slightly to be comfortable. "Alright, I have a question for you. One that you don't have to answer but I feel like you should because it would be very beneficial for everyone."

"What?"

"Why are you mad at, Winnie?" Natasha asked. "I mean, I know you two are still close and everything but I could cut the tension in this car with a knife, and she's even asleep."

Steve stayed silent for a little bit, pondering how he was going to word his answer. He wasn't even sure why he was mad at her, to be honest. She hadn't done anything wrong.

"Honestly, I don't know," he began, "It's not like she had even done anything for me to be mad at her I just am."

Natasha furrowed her brow and made a confused expression, "There has to be a reason. People don't just get mad at someone for no reason."

He opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out. Taking a deep breath, he began to speak, "I guess it's all the lies she's told me. I mean, I don't even know fully what happened in those six decades that I was gone but it must've been something because she's definitely not the same person that I first met."

"You do know that she had to lie to you, right? She didn't have much of a choice," Natasha tried to explain to him.

"I know, I know. But I also feel somewhat resentment towards Wins, only because she got to live out a life, and was able to be with the people she loved longer than I did."

The Romanoff girl sat quietly in her seat, she understood where Steve was coming from. "You might wish that you could have been Winnie but I know that if you actually did have her life you would hate it."

"What do you mean?"

"Winnie can't die. Her life is a curse and she has to live it out for all of eternity. She'll have to watch both of us die at some point, as well as everyone else she loves and will love."

Steve never really thought about it that much. He knew that she's had to endure the loss of Bucky and himself but he really didn't think about all the other people that she's met and gotten close to. The fact that he never thought twice about it made him feel guilty for ever bringing it up or getting mad at her.

He let out a sigh, "I didn't think about that.."

"Obviously," she scoffed as a thought popped into her head. "Wait, have you kissed anyone since 1945?"
