The evening was carefree at the Hotel Deucalion. It was the beginning of the Christmas holidays, and Jack and Morrigan were playing their favorite game, people-watching. Jack's eyepatch was temporarily lifted to his left temple, so he could see more in-depth information on the gossamer that was normally blocked for him. The both of them were leaning on the railing at the top of the extensive set of stairs, laughing hysterically when Jack would explain the positively absurd things he could see with his uncommon knack, being a Witness.
Frank, the Hotel Deucalion's party planner (and a vampire dwarf), had hosted a frivolous and totally unnecessary party to symbolize the start of the holidays, meaning the hotel was full of interesting people. There were high-level celebrities and writers from all of the well-known papers, Frank inviting them in hope of featuring as number one in the the 'Best Parties of the Holidays' part in the paper the next day.
"What about that lady? Next to the horsewun, wearing all of that atrocious jewelry?" Said Morrigan, pointing over the railing to whom she was indicating.
"Hmm" Jack thought aloud.
"Green-tipped fingers, which means she's experiencing money problems, or she recently received a lot of money. The latter by the looks of it." said Jack with a smirk.
"Anything else?" Morrigan pressed on. She thought Jack's knack was no short of amazing, although she would never admit it, and wanted to hear anything and everything.
"Erm... she's got a grey cloud that's raining lightly, which means she's a little sad, so maybe she is having money problems!"
Morrigan grinned at him. Sometimes, she wished she could see everything about everyone, however she assumed it would be quite exhausting at times; however exhilarating.
"How about you?" Jack questioned, moving his gaze to Morrigan. She made to turn away and make a run for it, but he grabbed her wrist and pulled her towards him.
Quite close.
She took a few stumbling steps backwards. He squinted at her and raised his hand as if to ward off something that was invisible to Morrigan's eyes."It's Wunder" Morrigan guessed, "isn't it".
"Yep. Heaps, and its everywhere." Being a Wundersmith, Wunder was drawn to Morrigan like insects to a bright light in the dark, so it was near her at all times, just waiting for her call.
"Hmm ok.. white cloud, you're happy!" Said Jack with a fake look of surprise.
"Don't look so surprised, Pirate boy." Retorted Morrigan with a scoff.
"And you've got a moon, which means you're either tired or a werewolf" said Jack with a snort.
"Yeah, sorry I didn't tell you, I'm a werewolf and not a Wundersmith. Got them mixed up." Jack laughed and looked at a point above her left shoulder.
"A rose" He persisted. "Which means beautiful, or love," He recited. "So it's obviously not the first one" Jack said laughing.
Morrigan didn't know why she took the harmless taunt so seriously. She took a short, sharp intake of breath, even surprising herself and causing Jack to look down at her sharply.
Morrigan started to feel oddly hot and embarrassed. Suddenly, all she wanted was to get away from Jack, and his annoying ability to See what didn't want to be Seen. She withdrew her hand from his lacking grasp easily due to his moment of genuine surprise, and turned to face away from him.
"Have fun at school, goodnight J- Jack" she said, trying without success to prevent her voice from breaking with emotion. Jack seemed to have noticed and said "Wait! Mog what's wrong? I didn't mean it, I was just teasing!"
He tried to grab her arm again but Morrigan pulled it away and started walking to her room. He seemed genuinely upset, but she couldn't bear to talk to him anymore. Morrigan peeked over her shoulder, still walking. Jack was still standing with a stupid look of surprise etched into his face. Seeing her look back at him he cried "Wait!" and ran after her.
She started walking faster. Jack was beginning to catch up to her now and she turned her face away from him, embarrassed, to attempt to hide her stupidly ego-crushed face from him. Again, unsuccessfully.
"Mog please!" He said, sounding desperate now. The had reached her room now and Morrigan wanted noting more then to hide within it and get away from him.
"It's nothing Jack, I'm fine!" She said, not meeting his eyes and attempting her normal scowl.
"No you're not, your cloud's storming" he said looking meaningfully into her eyes. Morrigan made a noise of anger and opened the door to her room and slammed it in his face. A single sad sigh evaporated from the depths of her chest.
"Morrigan please!" He called. Hearing her upset must have been like physical pain to him because he started hammering his fist on the door, Morrigan wouldn't be surprised if he broke it down.
Still knocking, he said "I'll stay here all night if I have to!" His voice muffled by the door between them.
Morrigan sophisticatedly ignored him
Besides, it's not like he really cared about her, as anything more than the topmost layer of a friendship. He was just spending time with her, and keeping up the act because Jupiter had told him to all those years ago.
Keep telling yourself that, the sensible part of her brain said.
Shut up, she told it.
