Prologue - Before Hogwarts/10th Birthday

Ever since I was old enough to walk and talk, my dad had always told me that one day I'd go to Hogwarts. On my 11th birthday I'd get a letter saying I was accepted to the school my father went to. Everytime after he told me a story involving Hogwarts and/or the wizarding world, I always had 2 questions: why didn't mom ever talk about Hogwarts and how was he so sure I'd go to Hogwarts like him? He always told me that I was much like him, that I had the spirit of a witch which would mean I'd go to Hogwarts. But for years, my parents wouldn't tell me why my mom never talked of Hogwarts.
On my 10th birthday, my dad had reminded me that this would be the last birthday before I'd get my letter to Hogwarts, which raised the question again: why didn't mom talk about Hogwarts like dad? I asked this as I had for many years now but this time, my parents looked at each other and my dad said "I think it's time she knows Hun."
"Time I know what? Did mom have a bad experience there and doesn't like talking about or something like that?" I asked a little worried.
My mom started "No no, nothing like that Sweetheart..." she paused. "I guess there's only way to tell you this, well..." she paused again, looking to my dad for support. "I never went, I'm what the wizarding world would call a muggle."
My dad continued by saying "And there is nothing wrong with that, love is love and blood-status can't change that." He gave my mom a warm smile.
"Uh, I have another question then..." my dad gave me a nod to tell me it's ok to ask. "What is my blood-status then? Because you're a wizard and mom's a muggle, what am I?"
My dad seemed to be a little caught off guard by this question, "Well darling, you'd be a half-blood. But again, there is nothing wrong with that, you're our creation of love and you mean the world to us whether you go to Hogwarts or a school here in London. We'll love you no matter what, forever."
"I love you guys too, forever." I said, pulling my parents into a hug.
"On that note, I guess I should start teaching you about the wizarding world and not just telling you stories. We've got a year to get you in the know about everything." my dad said as if I didn't know anything yet.
"Dad, you say that like I don't know anything, did you forget you're a wizard? Or that grandma and grandpa are still living near the burrow?" I asked jokingly, knowing what he meant.
"Speaking of which, the Weasleys invited us over to celebrate your birthday, grandma and grandpa will be there too." my dad said.
I loved the Weasleys very much, though their family was quite different from ours. In my family it was really just my mom, my dad and I together. The Weasleys however, have 7 children, making them 9 in total. Though the big difference in size, they were like my second family, I even called Molly and Arthur my aunt and uncle. Another thing that made the Weasley's so great was the twins, George and Fred. I'm the same age as them and though Aunt Molly thinks I keep the twins in check, I'm actually somewhat of a trouble maker myself and often help them with pranks when our families get together.
This time, though it was my birthday, was no different than always between me and twins. As soon as I finished opening my presents and eating my favourite wizard treat, pumpkin pastries, me and the twins disappeared to George's room to plan a prank.
George and I have always been a bit closer than Fred and I but no matter, the two of them are my closest friends and we share everything with each other.
"We heard that you were finally told your mom is a muggle." Fred said while drawing up a sketch of our latest prank.
"We've known for a long time, really because our dad always asks your mom tons of questions about muggle stuff." George continued while grabbing supplies.
"Yeah, it doesn't change anything really, she's still the amazing mom that she's always been." I said starting to set some things up.
"I guess it's just good to know, right? After all, some people like the Malfoy's might tease you for being half-blood" Fred spit out with a disgusted tone.
Geogre pulled me into a hug while saying, "It doesn't matter to us, we'll be here for you anyhow and if people like that start bothering you," he turned his voice to a whisper in my ear, "I'll stand up for you and make them pay for it."
"I'm really glad I have you two, I'm very lucky." I said finally after George let me go.
Once we finished setting up our prank, I made sure to be far enough from the action to not be involved but close enough to see what happens. Giving myself an alibi, I went to talk to Percy. Percy is probably my least favourite Weasley, he's so uptight and so focused on his studies, he doesn't seem to have fun ever. He hates the twins' pranks, so I'm glad he doesn't realize I help them when I'm over.
"Hey Percy, I was wondering if I could ask you some about Hogwarts?" I asked while knocking gently on his door.
"Hey Rayne, happy birthday by the way, uh, are the twins with you? He said, sounding a little on edge.
"No, why?"
"They've been pranking me non-stop recently, either way, come on in." he said, sounding relieved. "So what do you want to know?"
I sat on the edge of his bed, "I want to know what it's like, you know, in case I get a letter."
"What do you mean in case? Of course you'll get a letter and it's great, I love it there and can't wait to be a prefect."
"A prefect?"
"Yeah, I want to be trusted to keep things in order for Gryffindor. Especially if Fred and Geogre become Gryffindors."
"Aren't you just in your second year though? I thought you can't be a prefect until your fifth year?"
"You're right, but that just means I've got two more years to work towards it."
"Isn't your fifth year supposed to be Ron's first year too?"
"Yes it is, seems like the time can't pass fast enough, don't you agree?"
"Yeah, I..."
*tiszzz* *BANG* I was interrupted by the sound of fireworks going off. I know I helped plan the prank but it still caught me off guard. Percy immediately jumped up and went to search for where it was coming from. From the window I could see gnomes flying because we placed fireworks in their holes. I quickly ran out of the house with everyone to see the twins with large smiles on their faces. Aunt Molly seemed very cross until she saw my face in awe of all the beautiful colours, the most beautiful of all being the golden yellow ones. I smiled at the twins and giggled before Aunt Molly told them they would have been punished if they hadn't already degnomed the garden with the fireworks and if it hadn't made me so happy.
Sadly that was the end of our time together for that day as we still had to go visit my other grandparents. I thanked everyone for planning this and for my presents, I gave my grandparents hugs, as well as Aunt Molly and Uncle Authur, Bill, Charlie, Ron, Ginny Fred and George. George gave me the longest hug, apparently to make up for the fact that Percy didn't care for hugs and didn't give me one. We said our goodbyes and headed home.
