Scarlett finally got up and got dressed. She stood in front of the mirror and just stared. She eventually looked at the clock and knew she had to meet Tommy for their meeting. As she walked out her door, Liam and Lane were coming out of theirs.
"Meeting Mr. Shelby?" Liam asked as he mocked her.
Scarlett just locked her door and started walking away.
"I hope he's a good fuck!" Liam yelled as she kept walking.
The cold air felt good on her hot skin. It helped her calm down. She emerged the empty betting den and went and took a seat at Tommy's desk. He walked in a few minutes later and saw her sitting in his chair with her legs crossed.
"Do you feel powerful sitting in my chair?"
"I don't have to sit in your chair to feel powerful."
He raised his eyebrows and smirked.
"Did you fix the race today?" She asked.
"I did, as you suggested." He nodded.
"Good. It won't be long now before Kember shows up. Which means we are one step closer to taking over." She said as she stood up.
Tommy watched her walk around the desk as he sat in his chair.
"You know I suggested we do this weeks before you got here, but no one wanted to listen." Tommy said.
"Well now you have someone that will." She said as she sat down in the chair across from his desk.
Tommy got up and poured two drinks and handed one to Scarlett. He leaned against his desk as he stood right in front of her. He took a sip.
"I heard there was an altercation on your porch this afternoon."
Scarlett took a sip of her drink and looked down.
"I took care of it." She said not making eye contact.
"I'll say. Threatening to cut out his tongue is quite motivating." He joked.
Her head shot up as he laughed. She stood up and stood right in front of him
"Are you making fun of me Mr. Shelby?" She eyed.
"I'm taking Grace to the racetracks."
Scarlett scoffed.
"You make a cute couple." She said with no emotion.
          "Ms. Capone...are you jealous.
Scarlett rolled her eyes and turned around to walk out, but he caught her arm and pulled her back. Scarlett winced as she was turned around. Tommy noticed. He set his drink down and held her hand in the air then pulled her sleeve down, revealing a bruise right below her wrist. She could see the anger in his eyes. He couldn't look away from it.
"I fell getting out of the bathtub. I have always been very clumsy." She laughed hoping he'd believe her lie.
He looked her in the eyes. He moved on, letting her believe he really thought she fell.
"It's just a part of the plan." He said.
She gave him a confused look.
          "Taking Grace to the racetracks."
"Ahh no need to explain yourself. From what I've heard...you aren't good for me anyway, so enjoy her." She joked.
Tommy laughed a small laugh which surprised Scarlett.
"Did I just hear Tommy Shelby laugh?"
He shook his head and pushed her hair behind her ear. He pulled her in softly by her face. He ran his thumb over her cheek and leaned in to kiss her until Polly came storming in.
"Bloody hell Tom. You've done it now." She yelled.
He let go of her face and she moved to stand beside him.
"Were you going to tell me you fixed the race without Billy Kember knowing?" Polly threatened.
Tommy was about to respond, but she cut him off before he could get a word out.
"You just wrote all of our death sentences!"
          "Poll." Tommy said.
"You know rule number one is to not punch above your weight." She said fiercely.
"Billy Kember is there for the taking." He stated.
          "Says who?"
"Says us." Tommy said as he motioned towards Scarlett.
Polly laughed.
"I ran this business for five years."
"When I was away fighting, remember? Where I learned some things, such as you strike when the enemy is weak."
"I figured you stormed in here to talk family business."  He added.
Scarlett got the feeling this had to be between them so she started to grab her coat, but Polly blocked the door.
"Oh no, since she's your partner in crime now...she can hear this."
Tommy cut his eyes at Polly and Scarlett just watched.
"Freddie Thorne, Tommy's best mate since they were five got our Ada pregnant." Polly said as she looked over at Scarlett.
"He's a known communist." Tommy said without taking his eyes off Poll.
"You know what? I'll deal with it. You're too busy taking over the world." She said as she walked out.
Tommy followed Polly to the big table in the main room. Scarlett was standing at the door of Tommy's office.
"Ada wants you to give this letter to Freddie. She wants him to know, giving him the chance to do the right thing. I say we give him a chance." She said as she pushed a letter at Tom.
Tommy scoffed.
"All he sees in her are the machine guns, rifles, and the ammunition and some damn glorious revolution." He said as he walked over to the fireplace.
"What is it you really don't like about Freddie?" She questioned.
"She will have no life with a man on the run. If you can't see that, you can't see much."
He threw Ada's letter into the fire and Polly picked up the fireplace poker and pointed at Tom and then threw it on the ground.
"Damn them for what they did to you in France." She yelled and then walked out.
Tommy ran his hand threw his hair and then let his arm fall. He turned around to see Scarlett looking at him. Just then Curly ran in yelling about the horse. He told Tommy the horse was cursed because the Lee's put a bad seed in the hoof and a woman did a spell.
"You have to come Tom! Quick! It'll spread to his heart by tomorrow." Curly pleaded.
Tommy slammed his fists on the table, making Curly jump.
          "Fuck!"
"Wait outside Curly. I'll be there in a minute." Tommy said in a low tone.
As Curly walked out, Tommy passed Scarlett and went into his office to put his coat on. He walked over to her after he put his coat on and grabbed her face.
"Go to the Garrison. I'll meet you as soon as I deal with this. Won't be long." He said.
He quickly pecked her on the lips and then left. Scarlett stepped back in shock. She scrunched up her nose because she was confused about all of this. What the hell did he just do? Was that really how their first kiss was going to be? She shook her head in hope that she would shake the thoughts away and made her way to the pub. She walked in and immediately heard Arthur and John.
"Ahh the American Angel!" Arthur drunkenly yelled.
"Come sit with us, love....have a drink." John said as he put a toothpick in his mouth.
Ada then came up and put her arm through Scarlett.
"Ah piss off. You two are always with her."
The two girls laughed as they grabbed a bottle and two glasses and made their way into the private room to talk. Ada told Scarlett everything about Freddie and the baby.
"Ada I am so happy for you. I am here to support and help you no matter what. Okay?" Scarlett said as she raised her eyebrows.
"I know I know." Ada smiled.
Scarlett poured another drink. She had honestly lost count which never happens.
"Alright I've been talking for ages. Tell me. What is going on between you and my brother!"
          "Nothing Ada, just business."
Ada scowled at her.
"Oh the way you two look at each other...it is so much more than business I mean has he kissed you yet?"
Scarlett took a sip of her drink trying to hide her expressions.
"Oh my God!! He did kiss ya didn't he?" Ada yelled as she jumped up.
"Shhh!" Scarlett laughed as she pulled Ada back down to her chair.
Scarlett explained what happened with the kiss.
"Oh he was just in a hurry. He will definitely kiss you the right way. And hey, he remembered to kiss you goodbye." Ada smirked as she elbowed her.
Scarlett shook her head with a smile and finished her drink. Ada eventually left after a few hours and Scarlett was out drinking with John and Arthur. They were the last ones in the pub. Scarlett kept looking at the door. She wondered where Tommy was. The pub was closing in five minutes, but he never showed. Arthur nudged her shoulder.
"Tom was supposed to meet you here wasn't he?"
She nodded. Arthur looked down and shook his head.
"Come on, love. We will walk ya home."
She left with the two boys. John went on him to his kids as she and Arthur got about halfway to her house before she realized she forgot her coat.
"I can just get it tomorrow." She said.
"It's no problem, angel face. We need to sober up anyway." He joked as they turned around.
Her and Arthur walked in completely out of sight as they overheard Tommy and Grace's conversation.
"Shall I leave you alone?" She asked.
          "Came here for the company."
          "How's your beautiful horse?"
"I just put a bullet in his head."
          "Was he lame?" She questioned.
Tommy took a sip of his drink.
"He looked at me the wrong way. It's not a good idea to look at Tommy Shelby the wrong way."
          "What a waste." She said.
"In France I got used to seeing men die, never the horses. They die badly." He said and then the room went silent.
Grace was about to say something, but he beat her to it.
"I know you lied to me. You never worked in Dublin. I have friends there and no one has heard of you, so my guess is that you got pregnant and didn't want to disappoint your proper family."
She looked down.
"You won't tell anyone my secret?" She asked.
"Does it look like I tell people things?"
"What about Scarlett?" She raised her eyebrows.
          "Isn't she your girl?"
Tommy shook his head.
"Just a business partner." He said as he looked at Grace.
"So what do you sing?" He asked as he hit his hand on the table.
          "Anything." She responded.
He motioned for her to get on the chair.
"Happy or sad?" Grace asked as she stood on the chair.
          "Sad."
"Okay. But I warn you, I'll break your heart."
Tommy shook his head.
          "Already broken."
Grace started to sing and Tommy couldn't take his eyes off of her. Scarlett couldn't take it anymore. She grabbed her coat off the rack and made her way out without being noticed as Arthur followed. It started to rain and she was walking fast. Arthur caught up to her and stopped her.
"I've never liked her." He said, talking about Grace.
She nodded and they started walking back to her house.
"As much as I'd love to have ya, I couldn't take you away from Tommy. I see the way he looks at you and he would rearrange me face." Arthur joked.
She gave him a small smile.
"Thank you Arthur, but we are clearly just business partners."
"Don't listen to him, aye. He doesn't look at her the way he looks at you." He said.
They finally got back to her house and she walked up her porch stairs. She told him thank you and was unlocking her door when Arthur spoke up.
          "Scarlett." He said.
She turned around and looked at him.
"I love my brother, but he gets so wrapped up in the business. He will do anything to get what he wants...."he trailed off.
          "Okay?" She said softly.
"He won't mean to, but....he'll...he'll break your heart." Arthur said quietly
She closed her eyes and shook her head once, slowly, then looked at him.
"Can't break what's not there." She said.
