My 13th review is of AeolianEon 's novel, "The Enemy Beside Me"!
Cover:
It's a great cover. The colours used are compatible and create a pleasant combination. The font size and style is clear and appropriate for the cover.
It does take a while to find any connection between the cover and the story though. I understood only a few chapters later that the sun like image on the cover represented his ability which I'll not highlight (no spoilers!). Though it is a good symbol to exhibit, it would be nice to see something a little more in sync with the title alongside the subtle signs to catch readers' focus.
Blurb:
The blurb is pretty inviting. It presents the main character, who seems to be going through major changes. Reading on, I began to look forward to how exactly he was going to adjust to his new life and the mystery kid.
I was also curious to know what Jaxon was going to discover about the kid and the circumstances which will arise as a result.
Plot:
As I began reading, certain questions began to get answered. For instance, I began to understand the usage of the Zones system. I like the whole originality surrounding its origin.
I also got to be officially introduced to Jaxon Evans and almost everything about him. This led to the revelation of other important characters and through dialogue, narration, different points of view, and flashback, one gets to now them well too.
I especially like how the plot moves at a moderate pace. I must also commend your constant enlightenment on the Japanese culture. The element of surprise used in relation to Jaxon and Uchiyama (the kid) cannot go unnoticed as well! I'm really excited to see how everything works out.
Characters:
I've got to say Uchiyama Eein is definitely an interesting character. His mature demeanor and brutal honesty has a level of charm to it which makes him so cute and likeable. He honestly reminds me of a young Sheldon Cooper (I don't know if you've seen the Big Bang Theory or Young Sheldon).
Anyway, this made me want Jaxon to find out the mystery surrounding the kid even more. Eein is hands down my favourite character.
I also admire the level of confidence Jaxon possesses, even if he may come off as vain in some instances.
They make an unlikely duo in a healthy, hilarious way.
Grammar:
Frankly, almost no typographical and grammatical errors.
The punctuations and capitalisation was spot on and the spacing was acceptable.
Generally,
I think you book contains all the essential elements to soar. The element of surprise, suspense, culture and diversity and humour blend to form a novel with a wonderful plot and so much promise!
