Harry
I've felt nothing, but agony theses past three weeks. Melanie still in a coma and I worry that she might not make it out of this. The doctors gave me some hope a couple days ago when they put her off the ventilator since she's breathing on her own now. There's signs of brain activity too, so she's doing alright. Why hasn't she woke up yet?
I sit alone in the chair beside her bed watching the heart rate monitor beep up and down. Her hair is tied up in a ponytail with a band on her forehead. The bruising that was on her face, arms and legs are barely noticeable now. She looks much thinner now since she's not physically eating as much and I'm afraid she's not getting enough nutrition.
I take out my phone and answer the emails from parents of my patients. I have informed them why I had to cancel the last three weeks appointments but I can't do that forever. I know after this week I'll have to get back to work but I'd really want to be here when Melanie wakes up.
Miranda scares me as she places her hand on my shoulder. She can't come as often anymore because of work, but every time she does brings me food and a fresh clothes. However today she doesn't have anything with her. Maybe she forgot.
"Hey, how are you?" I ask.
"Holding up. I should really be asking you. Harry you've barely, slept, ate or bathe in these past few weeks. I think you need to go home for a couple hours clean yourself and have a decent meal for once."
"Yeah but Melanie could—" she cuts me off.
"Wake up I know, but you don't want the first thing she sees is a smelly and slickly looking man." Wow do I really look that bad right now. I take a quick whiff of myself and cringe knowing she's right. I get up from the chair kissing her forehead and whispering "I love you."
"Call me if she wakes up," I tell Miranda who nods and I go home. When I walk inside the house I smell something delicious coming from the kitchen. My mum smiles as she sees me walk in and I'm glad to see her.
"Hey mum," I sigh hugging her. I haven't seen her since before Melanie's incident because she lives three hours away. I need to see her more often though.
"How are you doing, hun?" She asks touching the side of my face.
"Not so good. I'm so scared I will lose her," a tear starts to fall and I let out everything I was holding in for the last few weeks. I just got Melanie back, and now there's a chance she won't make it. I'll just somehow have to continue the rest of my life without her in it. I'm hoping that's not the case of course, but the fact it's still possible is frightening.
"Honey, you won't lose her. She's going to wake up and you two will continue as usual. Now go clean up while I finish making this lunch for you," she says wiping away my tears. I nod and go take a shower, wash my hair, and shave the scuffle that was growing on my face. Once I was done grooming I go and eat what my mum made me. We talk for a bit, well she mostly talk while I just listened. I didn't mind, it was nice to know what she was up to a great distraction from everything.
My mum leaves me to take a nap which was weird at first because Melanie wasn't with me but I was so sleep deprived that I fell asleep. When I woke, it was nearly four hours later. Feeling somewhat refreshed I change into my running clothes and go out for a jog around the neighborhood. I blast my music and visual the happy times Melanie would join me on the weekends and we take a walk together simply enjoying each other's company. She was active enough but never could keep up with me when I ran so we just take long walks. I didn't mind at all because we always had the best conversation on those walks.
When I get back inside, I'm completely drenched in sweat. Stripping my clothes off, I go take a much needed shower. I brush my teeth, grab some fruit snacks for Kira and myself before heading back to the hospital.
As I walk back into Melanie's room, Kira reads her children's book about friendship. Every week, I give her a book and teach her to read. She then reads to Melanie once she can read it all on her own. I applaud her great reading skills when she finishes and pick her up put in my lap so we both can sit next to Melanie.
Miranda excuses herself to take a phone call and I listen to Kira talking to Melanie about her day at school. After she finishes she turns to me, "Harry we should sing that one song Melanie is always singing in the car," Kira suggest. I nod knowing what song she's talking about. I clear my throat before starting to sing Your Song by Elton John. Kira only sang at the chorus since that's the only part she knows.
"I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind
That I put down in the words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world" we finish the song and Kira wipes a tear. I didn't even realize I was crying again.
"I love that song," Melanie groggily speaks catching both our attention. Her eyes slowly start to flutter open as she scrunches her eyes trying to get use to the light.
"Oh my god, you're awake," Kira says.
"Melanie, how are you feeling?" I ask standing beside the bed.
"Ugh my head hurts and my body sore. What happened?" She groans looking around finally realizing where's she at. "Why am I in a hospital?"
"You were stabbed on your way home, you don't remember?" She looks at me wide eyed shaking her head.
"I'll go get the doctor and Mimi?" Kira says running out to the hallway.
"Wait? You're not my doctor?" She raises a brow at me. Huh?
"You're playing with me right?" This is one of her jokes again.
"No...who are you and who was that little girl?" Oh fuck she has amnesia.
"Ah Miss Cole glad to see your awake, let me run some quick test," Dr. Hynes says. I let him finish his examine on Melanie before asking him my concerns.
"Doctor she doesn't seem to remember me or Kira."
"Well, amnesia is very common in her case, she's suffered for a severe concussion, but if hers memory is not back once she's released make her stick to her regular routine. It'll help her remember more things and hopefully gain all her memories," he answers me before turning to Melanie again.
"I'll like to keep you here for the next couple of days and run a couple more tests before releasing you," Melanie agrees and he leaves with his clipboard.
"Honey, what is the last thing you remember?" Miranda asks and Melanie slowly sits up crunching her face in pain before taking a moment to think.
"You and Daniel telling me about your engagement," Melanie says and Miranda looks just as concerned as I do. "And what year do you think we're in?"
"2012." What she thinks we're eight years in the past.
"So, you really don't remember me?"
"No, sorry mister. Who are you?"
"I'm Harry, your boyfriend."
"What no...aren't you too old for me," she chuckles, before Miranda turns to her again to explain her current situation and I take a seat on the couch. This is too much, she doesn't remember me at all how is that possible. How are the last eight years just swiped away from her?
