Harry
I rush over to the hospital quickly praying she's alright. I should've answered her when she called and now she's hurt. I went to the neighborhood she was at but only police filled the street and informed me that Melanie was taken to the nearest hospital. She knew something was going to happen, I can tell by her fake tone and words she used in the voicemail. If I answer maybe I could've prevented anything from happening. I park my car terribly not really caring as I quickly get out and bolt inside. Looking around, I frantically ask the woman at the front desk about Melanie. She just got out of surgery since the bastard who stabbed her puncture a vital organ. She's in the ICU, so I know that's not good.
"Can I see her?"
"Only immediate family can see her right now, " the woman says, but I have to see her now.
"I'm her husband," I say. She gives me a look but doesn't ask anymore questions and tells me which room she's in. My heart drops when I see her hooked up to a ventilator and bandage around her head. Flashbacks of my father enter my mind, and a couple tears fall from my eyes. I can't lose her too, please make it of this.
I sit next to her grabbing her hand and kissing it softly. I sit in the room only sounds from the monitors and ventilator are to be heard. I sit with my head between my lap praying for her to make out of this alive because I don't know if I can continue without her.
Her doctor comes in to check on her and tells me everything I need to know. One of Melanie's lungs was punched so they did surgery to repair it. She also hit her head pretty hard so they're going to be checking her brain activity since she lost a lot of blood and oxygen. For now she's in a coma and they don't know how long she can be in this state. If her brain active is good then that's a sigh she could be getting better. Now, all I'm supposed to is wait for her to wake up.
Miranda and Melanie's dad Richard and Kira come in and I tell them what the doctor told me. "What's a coma mean?" Kira asks. I bend down to her wiping away some of her tears.
"It's when someone sleeps for a long time so they're body can rest and heal itself."
"So when Mel is better she'll wake up."
"Yep, she'll wake up," I flash her a smile giving her some hope. "Can she still hear me?" I nod.
"The doctor says talking to her might actually help her get better faster." She walks over to her sister touching her hand.
"You hear that sis, hurry up and heal yourself so we can play when you wake up." She kisses her sisters cheek before her dad takes Kira home. Miranda and I stay the night and she tells me some stories of Melanie as a child as a distraction. I appreciate her being here because I don't think I'd get through this alone, and I know she feels the same.
Miranda shares a story about the day Melanie wanted a treehouse so bad that she climbed up the tree in their backyard. Melanie said she's going to live up there forever until Miranda promised to build her a treehouse. Miranda didn't have the funds back then for a it and didn't want to upset her little girl by saying no, so she challenged her. She told her if Melanie could stay up there for the entire day she buy her one. Miranda figured a nine-year-old couldn't last a whole day and she come down eventually, so she took the risk. Melanie was pretty persistent though she managed to stay a whole seven hours until she got so hungry to the point she couldn't stay up they're any longer.
"A whole seven hours. Did she not need to pee?" I can't imagine someone that young not needing to use the rest room during that time.
"I'm convinced she peed her pants because she was so determined and she really smelled when she came back in, but she always denies it when I bring it up." I chuckle nodding seeing a young Melanie doing something like that.
