(Your POV)
"(Y/N), that was a great performance!" Becky clapped her hands with a small smile on her face. I couldn't help but smile. "I can tell you've been practicing!" I shyly tuck a strand of loose hair away from my face. Sometimes, I wish I wasn't so easily flustered by compliments! I climbed down from the steep ladder and landed on the ground with a soft thud.
Becky the bearded lady was always a supportive sisterly figure to me; she has been since I joined the roadside circus. Coming from a small one-horse town with the main income being charcoal, the town was quite poverty-stricken. Born as the youngest child of a family who already had four children wasn't easy for two struggling parents. Misfortunate followed my family every step of the way making life a living nightmare. It didn't help when my father's body caved to pneumoconiosis after years of inhaling charcoal dust while working in those poorly lit mines. He left behind a penniless widow with five mouths to feed.
My poor mother had to carry more responsibilities that her brittle bones could barely keep up with. To feed such a big family, my mother woke up at the crack of dawn and return home at dusk with an expression of pure exhaustion written on her face. Tirelessly, she worked two jobs as a maid at the local inn and was also a waitress at the local diner. Despite her weariness, she prepared meals with the little ingredients we had in our dusty old cabinets. Her once soft hands became harden and covered in calluses. Life became more and more of a struggle for my family as it wasn't easy living paycheck to paycheck.
No one offered their assistance in any way to my struggling family which sickens me. I lived in bliss despite the little belongings we had own. One day, a circus came into the small one-horse town I called home and offered beautiful wonders that one's mind could never imagine! I was swept into this brand-new world of bright colors and sound which caused my little soft heart to swell. I wanted to run off on my own to explore this world of fantasy. Yet, my mother held my hand tightly and brought me over to a stranger. I shielded myself behind my mother's apron from the curious eyes of the tall man dressed in red and white.
There was a quiet exchange of words between the two adults before I felt my little body being scooped up into the arms of another. My eyes grew wide as dinner plates. I watched stunned to silence as my mother traded her youngest child to a stranger for a sack of money. I felt my heart sink like a battleship that was just struck by a cannonball. Salty tears well up as I cried out her name, yet I got nothing but a somber look. My body began to squirm aggressively in the arms of whoever held me. Yet those arms wouldn't budge one bit.
I watched the one who brought me into the world slip away into the crowd with my siblings following her like lost puppies. I felt my body give in to the overwhelming grief and heartache. That was many years ago when my mother gave me a way to the Ring leader Greg. I joined the fellow circus workers which became my new family. I was raised by the clowns who had soft hearts and held me in their gloved hands with such care. I wasn't the only one left behind by their family, Becky was left too. We grew up together and practically became sisters.
Here with my new family, I found my hidden talent of flexibility. Contorting into unnatural shapes was a real show stopper! I became known as "Flexabella" the amazing contortionist! The looks on the crowd's faces as my body contorts unnaturally like some supernatural beast always made me smile. Entertainment for the people became my life's work and I couldn't see myself doing anything else.
