Chapter 4

Aubrey stepped inside Ethan’s loft apartment which was situated above a swanky downtown clothing store. Aubrey looked around; it was a bachelor pad straight out ofHollywood.  From the front door she could see nearly the entire apartment.  The space was large, with design elements creating separate rooms.  She took in the well equipped kitchen and the Olive colored couch and love seat.  She could see an array of computers set against the back wall.  There were only two doors besides the one she walked in, a standard wooden door set into the right hand wall, which if the retro sign on the door was any indication was the bathroom.  Another heavy sliding metal door was set near the computer area.  It had a padlock on it.  She assumed it was a storage area of some sort.

Despite the industrial feel of the space cherry wood floors coupled with simple wall lighting gave the entire room a soft glow.  There was a raised area with a small set of steps to take you into the “bedroom” which had a large four poster bed, nightstand, and armoire.  The art on the walls made her blush even though the paintings were tasteful she could still pick up the curves of the female body.

“It’s not much, but it’s home.”  Ethan said simply.

“Oh quit being so modest, I would bet those computers alone cost more than I get paid in a month.”

He grinned sheepishly. “Well the better the machine, the better the gaming.”

“Doesn’t stop me from kicking your butt though does it?” She laughed.

“Oh, really?”

“Yup.” She popped.

“Care to put your money where your mouth is so to speak?”

“Oh, you’re on buddy!”

Aubrey raced to the computer that was facing away from the front door and planted herself in the seat.

“Terms?”

“The one with the most kills after 5 rounds wins.  If I win, you go out with me again.”

“Okay, and if I win you let me submit an article to your magazine.” Aubrey was never one to pass up the chance at a writing gig.

He hesitated, “Scared?” She teased.

“It’s not that.  You really just don’t know anything about the subject matter.”

She quirked an eyebrow at him, “how can you be so sure?”

“Just trust me on this one.”

She pursed her lips, disappointed.

“Fine, if I win you show me a copy of your super secret magazine, tonight.”

“I…I don’t want you scared off, I have quite enjoyed your company.”

“Jesus Ethan, what is it Serial Killer Weekly?”

He laughed at that. “No, it’s just…never mind, I agree to your terms.”

“Okay, let’s play and may the best woman win.” She grinned.

After several hours of game-play, Aubrey threw her hands in the air and pushed the chair back from the infernal machine.

“It’s no wonder I own your ass, your connection speed sucks.”

He shrugged nonchalantly, “Some days are worse than others.”

The both logged out and turned off their machines.  He picked up their second dessert and walked over to the couch taking a seat.
