"Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean."

First lines of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", I promised I'll make it known I'm reading.

You would've never believed, even if you saw it with you own eyes, what happened on Christmas Eve. One lad from a nearby trench wrote a poem describing the event. He read it in front of everyone, on Christmas Morning.

"The night of Christmas Eve,
Guns blaring and people screaming
Will soon be forgotten.

For on the day of Christmas
The memories of war will soon be far away
As the enemies become friends once more.

All you will hear is silence and laughter
And joy and happy ever after,
As they join for a friendly man's game,
Enemies playing side by side,
As they cheer on no man's land
Where it was once forbidden. "

He named it "The War was Forgotten for Just One Day", and I hope it won't be a day.

Anyway, that's exactly what happened, it was magical. Late, past midnight, on Christmas Eve, Kelly and a couple of other lads, in the dead silent night, as neither we nor they felt like shooting on the Dawn of Christmas, started humming "Silent Night". It almost lulled me to sleep, but I knew I shouldn't. Then, someone, I'm not sure, who it was, started signing. We sang for a little while, but were shocked when we heard the same melody thrown back at us, but in German.

In the morning, we got onto no man's land and exchanged (traded) gifts. I traded three packets for some wooden German buttons for my sister, I'm sending them with the letter. And for you, I got you a box of fine German chocolates. Hope you enjoy!

Greetings to my family and Merry Christmas!

Percy, xx

P. S. - Thank you for the photograph, really cheered me up! And when Kelly saw it he snatched it from my hold and paraded around with it until I got it back. Sorry!

The poem from this letter-chapter is not mine; it was written by AlyciaJadeBroadbent titled "The war was forgotten for just one day" and can be found their book "My war poems". I suggest you check it out, it's an interesting retelling of The Great War and World War II in the form of poetry.
