When you think of volleyball, you think of a team sport, right? Six players on the court working together in order to crush their opponents. From the serve, receive, set, and down to the spike, or hell- even a setter dump, the complete trust and awareness of your team is vital. And you, yourself, must get along with those you play with.
In the case of both Hinata Shoyo and Kageyama Tobio, it's clear that both have had quite a problem when it comes to playing successfully with a team.
In Hinata's case, his team was a last minute, thrown together group of boys that barely knew the basics of volleyball. His first match in middle school seemed to be one against six as he fought his hardest to work with what little skill he had, along with teammates who didn't know what they were doing.
Ending in a predictable defeat, Hinata's team left with their heads low– or rather, Hinata walked away with a shameful loss.
He tried his best and had nothing to show for it. After throwing himself across the court to receive a ball, getting hit in the face more than a few times, and getting scolded by some raven haired boy – seemingly with anger issues – Hinata wasn't a single step closer to his dream of becoming a real volleyball player. One that can spike any ball, get past any blocker, and most importantly, become the ace.
This failed dream of his almost crushed his spirit until he began talking out like he had no control of his own words. "I will beat you one day. I'll be the last one standing on the court." His head was now held high as he stood at the top of the steps.
The taller, Kageyama, turned around slowly. His expression didn't display any interest in Hinata's words as he took a moment to take in what he had heard. "Your receives suck. You serve like an elementary school kid. And I'm guessing you can't set for shit. The only value- or should I say wasted potential you have is that insane jump of yours. Without even the basics down, you have no chance of beating me. You will never even come close to beating me."
As Kageyama walked away, Hinata felt a gloomy presence take over his emotions. He knew he shouldn't be crying at something so insignificant. He felt weak in this state yet he held no control as he stood atop the steps with tears flowing down his face.
One day Hinata will beat Kageyama. He doesn't know how or when, but it will happen. One way or another.
Moving to Kageyama, he comes off as a controlling, egotistical, and angry 'king.' Hence how he earned his famed nickname: the "King of the Court."
His natural talent outshone the abilities of his former teammates, though he doesn't put it to good use. Daily, his teammates would have to bear all of the yelling and insane sets their setter threw at them.
Kageyama was never satisfied. No one moved quick enough. No one hit his sets properly. No one gave their all. No one seemed to enjoy volleyball anymore.
Each day, he overflowed with frustration until eventually, his limit was reached. After sending an impossible-to-hit set to one of his spikers, he went a little too far with the yelling and demands.
The next set was sent to nobody.
An act of rebellion by his team caused a new fear to grow. He felt abandoned yet his relationship with his teammates was far from 'close' or 'healthy.'
Looking back, he realized everyone was done with him and no longer felt like being treated as the royal Kings servants.
It was then that he decided to stop trying so hard. No, he didn't put in any less effort into volleyball but he quit communicating with his team and basically left them to guess his movements.
