It was just after eight in the morning when Demir crossed the hospital corridor to the cafeteria. He had just left a monthly meeting with Ekram Bey in which he had to pretend he did not hear Burak's indiscreet comments about his professional attitude towards Selin and her family. According to him, Demir was dedicating himself a lot to Selin, treating her differently from his other patients.
He ordered a coffee from the waiter and sat down at one of the farthest tables. As ridiculous and baseless as Burak's accusations were, Demir could not get the words he had spoken to him out of the meeting room out of his head.
"— Oh-oh Demir Bey, why such a hurry? — Burak teased, leaving the room. — I don't think your patient is awake at this hour.
He was a few steps behind Demir who immediately stopped where he was when he heard the biased words from his co-worker.
— I don't know what kind of game you're playing... — Demir turned to the man determinedly and waited for him to approach. — Nor what you intend to achieve with these dubious words, but know that I will never allow you to question my professional ethics, let alone my character.
— I am not the one who doubts your nature, Demir Bey. You are the one who has been more and more full of double standards. — Burak smiled detestably while pronouncing the words in a serene tone. — You were the only one who came to this hospital with a huge pile of rules that cost Merve and Bora's relationship. — He remembered calmly. — But now you are also the one who spends more time in the cafeteria next to the parents of one of your patients than in your office. Not to mention, of course, you spend hours inside that ICU every day before going home. I wonder what is so interesting about this girl... — He smiled pretentiously, before proceeding: — Maybe it's time for a change of doctors..
Demir brought his hands up to the collar of Burak's coat and pulled him to him in a sudden and violent way. If anyone saw them he would be in big trouble, but he wouldn't mind if it meant he could wrench that superb smile off Burak's face with his own fists.
— Ah! Check it out! The Super Demir has revealed himself once again! — Burak exclaimed in mockery. — You may even think that you became her hero, but Selin Sever will be your destruction. "
The distinctly intimidating tone used by Burak made Demir fear that the man was planning something that might not harm him, but Selin and her recovery. Their relationship had improved a lot after the initial shock and non-acceptance of it had passed. Selin was, as Merve had said, a person who is impossible to dislike.
She had a child's sweetness that quickly captivated Demir. Besides, she was an intelligent woman who liked to talk about everything. She was also curious, always wanting to know what his and Nil's words meant. But above all, she was persistent, or, as she said, a perfectionist. Her dedication to physical therapy and treatment was almost palpable.
The effort she made to overcome her limits and acquire new small conquests day after day impressed Demir as much as it worried him. He couldn't tell if behind all that effort there was a vain expectation on her part to walk again.
Demir hoped that she was not harboring false hopes because he knew that if that were the case when reality hit her, the result would be devastating. He knew that the hospital's team of psychologists was doing their best to help Selin and her family deal with the situation and face the new reality. Still, Selin's thoughts and feelings were a mystery, she was certainly showing less than she felt for fear of worrying or disappointing her parents.
Coming to that conclusion made Demir sure that he had made the right decision the night before. He had broken not only the hospital rules but his own rules and called Merve to ask for Selin's father's phone number. Obviously the man had found the call strange, but when Demir finally explained the reason for it, all the tension dissipated and Semih began to listen carefully to the doctor's words.
