Selin suddenly opened his eyes. Through the glass in the window she could see that darkness was still taking over the sky. She heard Demir's even breathing, which was deep asleep, beside her on the bed. She wasn't sure when he had arrived from the hospital, but it was probably too late, the way he slept indicated that.
Demir was lying on his stomach with his face turned to the bathroom door. He must have been very tired since he usually used to hug her when he lay down. Selin tried to go back to sleep, but her mind started to work and completely scared off any sign of sleep.
An unexpected restlessness washed over her and it was impossible to suppress a long sigh. Demir moved slightly, Selin knew he had been awakened by her. But the anguish and uneasiness that ran through every inch of her body was infinitely stronger than her empathy for her husband's fatigue.
— Selin? — Demir called out to her in a sleepy voice. He lifted his neck and turned, resting his face on the pillow again, while facing her. — What happened to sevgilim, can't you sleep? Are you feeling something?
The poor lighting did not prevent Selin from visualizing the worried countenance her husband had. She sighed heavily, not knowing how to answer his question. Yes, she couldn't sleep. Yes, she was feeling something. And, yes, she was completely unable to explain what exactly was happening to her at that moment.
— Sevgilim? — The doctor insisted, becoming fully awake to the tormented expression that his wife's face reflected.
Selin remained silent for a long time, just staring at her husband. She bit her lower lip in an anguished way, as if she were looking for the right words to describe what was going on inside her.
— I'm hungry. — She concluded in a lament, before releasing the air heavily.
— Hungry? — Demir's face curved in confusion and strangeness.
Selin did not usually wake up in the middle of the night, except on the rare occasions when she had some kind of nightmare or when he accidentally ended up making a noise when he arrived from the hospital. She also didn't usually feel hungry in the middle of the night, she always had dinner at the same time and when she ventured out trying to wait for him awake she ended up eating something.
— Didn't you have dinner today? — He asked, even though he knew the question and the possibility sounded stupid.
— Yes, I had dinner. — She said, her face contracted in uncertainty. — But this is a specific hunger.
— A specific hunger? — Demir repeated frowning and staring at his wife's face, partially visible due to the moonlight. — Allah, Allah. I wonder what that means.
— I want melon. — Selin declared abruptly. — With mint ice cream.
— Ne?! — Exclaimed the doctor at the unexpected answer.
— Ya Demir, I really want to. — She assured her in a sly voice. — My stomach is jumping at the thought.
— Sevgilim, I can even get the ice cream. — He informed her sitting on the bed. — But where am I going to find a melon at such an hour?
— Ya Demir, I really want it! — Selin insisted. — Lütfen, I will not be able to sleep. I will not be happy.
— Selin. — Demir slightly reproached his wife. — Yapma.
— Lütfen, Demir! I never ask for anything!
— Tamam sevgilim. — He gave up. — I'll find a way.
— Gerçek mi? — She asked in amazement as she watched the man get up. — Ya you are the best husband in the world!
Demir gave Selin a forced, almost mocking smile. He couldn't believe he was even getting dressed to go looking for a melon in the middle of the night. His brain had barely accepted that he would never be able to understand the way his wife's head worked and now he needed to stare at her stomach that looked just as strange.
