It was almost the end of afternoon when Selin woke up. The sedative added to the stress and the effort she had made to perform the task passed by the physiotherapist led her to a deep sleep.
Selin wasn't sure what had happened, maybe it was just a nightmare. Perhaps that man named Burak was a friend of Demir and was trying to play a trick on her.
She would talk to him as soon as the two saw each other again. He had no right to make up a story as insensitive as that. Didn't he know that Demir was the main reason why Selin was so dedicated to treatment?
If Demir was no longer in her life, why would she try? Her parents and her friends were more than satisfied that she was still alive.
Selin didn't want to be seen as ungrateful, but the truth was, she was tired of it all. From the first day, she tried to stay positive, tried to ignore the looks of pity and overwhelming concern. It was a great effort to keep away from the sadness that existed within her.
She did not want to succumb to that feeling of defeat. She didn't want to give up, but sometimes it seemed to be much stronger than she was. That was why she worked so hard to make everyone around her happy.
Selin wanted her parents and friends to be happy whenever they saw her. She wanted Nil to celebrate every move she made. But more than that, she wanted Demir to look at her in a way that only he could. Her heart became tiny whenever he gave her that smile that made her forget even how to breathe.
It was as if his happiness kept her away from suffering.
Whenever Demir said he was proud to see her dedication, she knew it was true. His eyes didn't lie. She saw a different glow in them each time she told how physical therapy had been.
She would never forget his expression when he saw her flex her forearm for the first time. He was so admired and so happy. Demir believed her, he didn't treat her like a poor thing who had lost her body movements. For him, Selin was a conqueror whose limits only she could define.
That was why she didn't believe he would be able to leave her. At least not on their own. If that story were true and Demir had really left the hospital, Selin was afraid to know why.
She heard the sound of the door opening slowly. Inevitably her heart rejoiced at the possibility of Demir coming to explain the whole story.
— Selin Hanım, I'm glad you're awake.
Burak's voice sounded like a sudden stop to the girl's heart.
— Why are you here? — Whether or not her question came out rudely, she couldn't care less. She wanted to understand what was going on.
— I told you Selin Hanım, since Dr. Demir Erendil left the hospital, I am your new doctor. — He answered patiently.
— Neden?
— Selin Hanım, it is important that you know that Demir and I are on the same level of knowledge and experience. — The doctor said, smiling. — This exchange will not affect your recovery in any way. You won't even notice the difference.
— Hayır. — Protested Selin. — Neden Demir left the hospital?
— Unfortunately I cannot provide you with this type of information.
— Tamam. Who can then?
— Only the director of the hospital knows why Dr. Demir left us. — Burak clarified. — I can try to bring him to you, but I do not guarantee that he will speak.
— Olabilir. — Selin accepted the suggestion. — I want to talk to him as soon as possible.
— First I will do a check on you and then I will go to him.
