Chapter 9

Fern refused to open her eyes as she felt a giant lump form in her throat and her heart slowly grew more pained. She wished that she was in a dream, reality far from her. She groaned as she opened her eyes, the tears immediately filling up to the brim. Fern turned to face the wall, biting hard on her pillow to keep from screaming. She felt the tears run quick down her face and soak the pillow as she broke into silent sobs. Just as she was about to get up, the door opened. Fern felt the bed shift under the new weight that had appeared next to her. Fern slowly turned around to be met with the swollen, puffy, red eyes of her mother. Fern still felt the tears run down her face as her mother gave her a look of sympathy before the tears started to flow down her own.

“Oh Fern. It's going to be alright, he'll be home before we know it.” Her mother choked, her voice cracking from the sobs she was trying to keep contained. Fern couldn't say anything, her heart and tongue were too heavy to do what they were told. Fern just sat, letting the tears fall faster and faster down her face. Fern's mother pulled her into a hug as Fern snuggled her face into the crook in her neck, her tears getting her mother's shirt wet.

“I'm going to miss him so much.” Fern sobbed clinging onto her mom for dear life. Her mother rubbed small circles on her back as she tried comforting Fern as best she could.

“I know, I am too, but he's still here, we shouldn't crying when he isn't even gone yet.” Her mom informed softly. Fern nodded in agreement as she was pulled out of the hug. She stood up, her legs felt like they were made of jell-o, not responding to her commands. Suddenly, the feeling of anger consumed her emotions, she fell to the floor in a fit of sobs, hitting the floor as hard as she could with her fist.

“Why did he have to join the army? Doesn't he know that we worry sick about him. Doesn't he know that I need my father? Doesn't he know that he could d-” Fern couldn't finish as her sobs consumed her voice, the pain in her heart becoming unbearable. Fern sat on the ground in defeat. Her mother had left the room, leaving her to deal with her own anger. She placed her head in her hands, watching her tear drops stain the carpet below her.

Fern felt arms wrap carefully around her, picking her up bridal style and then setting her on a lap as they sat on the bed. Fern looked up to see the warm blue eyes that belonged to none other than Aden. Fern felt her heart skip a beat as he gave her a look of sympathy before kissing her forehead in comfort. Fern buried her face into his neck, her sobs taking over once again, making Aden's shirt soaked. Aden rubbed her back as he cooed comforting words into her ear until the sobs subsided to become only tears silently falling down her face.

“I know that your dad is leaving today, so I came over to see how you were doing. Not too well I see.” Aden said, finally trying to talk to her since he showed up. Fern nodded, as she sucked in a shaky breath before forcing herself to look ad Aden. His eyebrows were creased in worry as his lips were formed into a slight pout.

“I'm going to miss him so much.” Fern whispered, resting her head on his shoulder.

“I know, but if you try and move past him being gone, he'll be back before you know it.” Aden replied as he slowly started to rub circles on her back once again. “I think you should go see him.” Aden continued before pulling her up on her feet and wrapping his arm around her waist for support. They walked slowly down the stairs as Fern felt her heart beginning to break again as her eyes fell onto the scene in front of her. It was her mother, her eyes were red and her cheeks tear stained as she sobbed into her father, his eyes even more red and swollen then hers. Her dad looked up as he opened his arms for her to join. Fern ran as fast as she could into her father's arms. Aden left and went into another room to leave Fern and her family alone.
