Chapter 15

Fern awkwardly played with her fingers as she and Bridget waited in silence for Aden to show up. He had told her that he would be late to her house because he needed to take care of a few things before he came over. Jay wasn't over either because he had something with his family, so now it was only herself and Bridget in Fern's room. Fern was dreading the moment when Bridget would start talking, the tone in her voice bound to send unsettling chills throughout Fern's body. Fern could feel her palms sweating as she rubbed them awkwardly across her pants, trying her hardest to get the moisture off.

“So...” Bridget started, her smirk sly and mysterious, a glint of hatred flashing across her eyes. Fern sucked in a short breath as she sat up straighter, ready for whatever Bridget was about to throw at her. “How have you been Fern?” Bridget purred evilly, walking around the room slowly, picking up various things here and there before putting them down with a disgusted look on her face. She made sure to make a big show of rubbing her hands on her jeans before moving on.

“I'm fine.” Fern responded through clenched teeth, her finger nails digging into the palms of her hands. Fern knew they weren't talking about her, Bridget was underhandedly trying to talk about her and Aden.

“Good, good. We wouldn't want anything to upset you, would we?” Bridget snarled, narrowing her eyes into a glare as she picked up the picture frame that had the drawing Aden drew for her in it.

“Don't touch that.” Fern gasped standing up and making her way over to grab it out of Bridget's hands.

“What? This?” Bridget asked innocently, her smirk causing Fern to get even more heated

“Yes. Now put it down Bridget.” Fern demanded, holding out her hand angrily.

“Wait I just want to- whoops sorry...” Bridget giggled as she looked at the broken glass and picture frame on the floor, the drawing had tears in it from the glass. Fern blinked back tears as she looked helplessly at the drawing on the floor, a lump in her throat forming. Fern felt like punching, kicking, anything to cause Bridget the same pain that she caused Fern. Right as she was about to lunge Bridget's way, Aden walked through the door, the huge grin on his face leaving as soon as he takes in the scene.

“What happened?” Aden questioned, running over and starting to pick up the glass.

“Bridget dropped it.” Fern squeaked, biting her bottom lip to keep from sobbing, she knew that she shouldn't be getting this upset over the picture, but for some reason she was.

“I'm sure it was just an accident.” Aden shrugged, placing the pieces of glass into a tiny pile.

“Yeah, I'm sorry Fern.” Bridget squealed, bending down next to Aden, sending Fern a quick smirk, showing she really wasn't.

“How about you go down and find a better picture frame than this one?” Aden commanded softly, standing up and wiping away the tear that started to fall down Fern's face. Fern nodded as she walked out to find a better frame than the last. She started digging through the closet as her dinosaur replacement phone buzzed. She had to use her brother's old phone until she had enough money to buy a new one, the buttons on it barely even worked. Fern pulled out the phone to see a text message.

From Bridget:

Get up here.

Was all it said, Fern felt chills going down her spine. Was she hurting Aden? She couldn't stand the thought of her hurting Aden, what if it was about her? Fern dropped her phone not caring if it broke as she sprinted quietly up the stairs. Fern stopped as she saw Aden and Bridget talking. Fern quietly disappeared into the shadows, unseen by both Bridget and Aden.
