Chapter 14

Winter slowly melted to spring and the birds soon began chirping and the flowers started blooming. Ever since Valentine's Day, everything had been the same, either Bridget didn't care that Aden and Fern danced together, or she didn't notice. Fern felt a little trickle of sweat fall down her forehead as she wiped it away, concentrating on what she was working on. Fern insisted that they start working on the garden since the snow had melted away like she had promised. They have been working as much as they could for the past couple weeks. It was slow progress but it would be worth it.

So far they had the new grass sod on the ground, the brick trail-way remade, the fountain pipes were all brand new, and both the bench and bridge cleaned so they sparkled in the sunlight. All they had left to do was to plant flowers and the tiny garden would be finished. Aden came up next to Fern as he handed her more flowers to be planted into the ground. Fern smiled appreciatively as she took the tiny yellow and purple flowers from his dirt covered hands.

“I can't believe we're almost done, you're a green thumb magician!” Aden laughed as he knelt down beside her, digging holes so she could place them in easier. Fern laughed, she didn't think she had a green thumb. She just called it common sense with plants. Fern looked over at Jay who was digging holes in the ground so he could place the rose bushes right next to the arch, in hopes that one day they will start to grow onto it.

“Why don't you go help Jay, I think he might need more hands than I do.” Fern requested quietly, laughing as she watched him sit down in exhaustion.

“But you're more fun to talk to.” Aden whined, nudging her slightly with his shoulder. Fern felt her heart rate speed up, her heart telling her to let him stay but her mind telling her otherwise. She knew Bridget was behind them, watching her every move. Fern still didn't understand how Bridget had missed her and Aden dancing together, but she was extremely grateful that she hadn't. Fern shuddered at the thought of what Bridget would do if she had seen them.

“No Aden, go and help Jay.” Fern commanded, more authority in her voice than before. Aden raised his hands up in defeat.

“Fine, fine. I'll go help the hill billy.” Aden sighed, standing up and brushing his hands off on his jeans.

“Don't call him that!” Fern gasped, trying her hardest to contain her laughter. Aden stuck his tongue out playfully as he walked over to Jay, clapping him on the shoulder as he took his shovel and continued digging. Fern turned to see Bridget standing on the bridge, looking bored and she stared up at the sky. Fern felt anger bubble up inside her as she stood up and crossed her arms over her chest.

“I know you're staring at me Fern.” Bridget yawned, pulling her eyes from the sky as she focused on her. Fern felt self-conscious as Bridget looked her up and down, rolling her eyes, a disgusted snarl on her lips. Fern glanced over to Aden and Jay to see if they had seen. They hadn't.

“Are you going to help or what?” Fern growled, the irritation in her voice showing. Bridget shrugged, focusing on her perfectly manicured nails.

“I don't do labor.” Bridget giggled innocently, only the venom behind the comment was as clear as day.

“Well now you do.” Fern replied, her voice equally as sweet and innocent. Bridget narrowed her eyes as she walked up and grabbed the shovel roughly that Fern was holding out to her from her hands, her eyes held hatred as she passed. Fern felt chills run through her body. Maybe that wasn't such a good idea. Fern and Bridget worked in silence, neither one willing to talk. Fern was about to place one of the last flowers into the ground as she heard rustling coming from the bush. Fern sensed Bridget tense up as well, both their eyes fixed on the bush in front of them. Fern took a quick intake of breath as she watched a baby bunny hop out from it's hiding place, it's big brown eyes looking up at her innocently.
