Chapter 10

Fern sipped her coffee slowly as she walked up and into the school for the first day back after break. She smiled slightly as she saw Aden and Jay talking together, she assumed they were waiting for her. She walked faster as the cold air nipped her nose and cheeks, causing them to tingle slightly. Fern's smile grew bigger as she grew closer to being reunited with her two favorite guys. The smile fell off Fern's face as she heard from five feet away the shrill voice of Bridget.

“Aden! I've missed my Boo!” She squealed, running past Fern and leaping into an unsuspecting Aden's arms. Aden's laughter boomed as he hugged her back, squeezing her once before letting her go. Fern hadn't realized she had stopped walking until Jay looked over at her, chuckling at how silly she looked. Jay sauntered over before wrapping Fern in a hug, the strong smell of cologne engulfing her nose.

“I've missed ya darlin'!” Jay drawled in his thick country accent, he released her before grabbing the coffee out of Fern's hand.

“Hey! That's not a nice way for a welcome back.” Fern pouted, standing on her tip toes in an attempt at claiming back her cup that was held high above his head. Jay flashed his perfectly straight teeth before taking a huge sip of her drink. She squealed in protest. Fern hated sharing food or drinks. You could say she was a big germaphobe.

“Jay!” She groaned refusing the drink he was holding out to her. His eyes held confusion for a split second before returning to his calm, unreadable look he always wears.

“Is there a problem?” He asked, still holding out the drink, waiting patiently for her to take the drink back.

“Yes! I don't like sharing things!” Fern whined pushing the drink back towards him. Jay just shrugged before drinking the rest of the cup and throwing it away in the bin next to them. “You owe me one.” Fern muttered her arms crossed over her chest before turning to start to walk in Aden and Bridget's direction. Aden stood there his arms crossed awkwardly over his chest, a fake smile only Fern would recognize plastered on his face. Fern let her eyes stray away from Aden and fall onto what Bridget was doing. Fern felt her stomach drop as she watched Bridget try and helplessly flirt. She batted her eyes far too many times than needed and wore a stupid grin on her face. Whenever he said something she would giggle like she had no idea what was going on, play with her hair, and bat her eyelashes so furiously that it looked like something got caught in her eye. Fern felt her cheeks burn in anger as Bridget was constantly trying to touch Aden, whether it was on his arm, his hands or in his hair. Every time she would touch him, he would flinch away uncomfortably and she acted like nothing happened before trying again. How dull was she?

Fern started wondering why she even became friends with her. Fern rolled her eyes as she realized that Bridget was the only girl that ever talks to her, just her luck. Bridget glanced towards Fern's way meeting her eyes. Bridget stared at Fern, sending a small venomous smile her way that only a girl would be able to recognize. What was going on? Fern was determined to find out as she squealed Bridget's name equally as dimwitted as Bridget always does, running towards the girl with red hair and slamming her into a tight hug.

“I've missed you!” Fern shrilled a little too happy, she flinched at her pathetic acting, Aden would totally know something was up.

“I just saw you on New Year's hon.” Bridget replied, prying Fern's arms from her, the venom in her voice just lingering beneath the surface, practically undetectable. Man, she was good. Fern shrugged before turning towards Aden. A smile was clear on his face but it didn't touch his eyes.

“How are you Bud?” Aden whispered into Fern's ear, his warm breath causing little butterflies to form in her stomach. Fern shrugged, hoping that he believed that the reason she was acting so happy was because her father was gone. “I have something planned for later!” Aden announced before bringing Fern in for a tight hug. She felt Bridget's eyes burning holes in the back of her head as Fern struggled to get out of Aden's grip.
