June 1831

As the rain hit the silver pavement, Eponine walked the streets of Paris alone. The night sky was brilliant, a beautiful moon shone down and the stars covered the blackness with their incredible light. It was all Eponine's idea of a perfect night. Except for one thing, Marius was going insane.

Eponine had first met Marius the first day she came to Paris with her parents, sister, and brother. He was living in the apartment next to hers and her father had sent Eponine on a mission to beg for money from him. That had started the beauty of their friendship.

The two were still best friends to this day and Eponine did everything for Marius. She delivered letters for him, helped him find places in the city, and aided him when he was lost.

Then Cosette had come into the picture.

Eponine remembered Cosette from when they were children. Cosette's mother, Fantine, had taken Cosette to Eponine's parents' inn to live there. However, the Thenardiers horribly abused Cosette, feeding her worse than the cat, making her clean, and beating her. All this happened while Eponine and her sister, Azelma, were pampered and spoiled. Then one day, a man had come and taken Cosette away.

Now it seemed as if the roles were reversed.

Cosette was beautiful, nothing like the pitiful, ragged creature Eponine remembered her as. She had long and golden curls, soft-looking and pale skin, and the brightest blue eyes. Not only that, but she looked healthy, was clean, and was dressed in the most gorgeous of dresses. Meanwhile, Eponine had become scrawny and filthy from living on the streets and not having much to eat. Her pathetic dress was torn and covered with dirt, she was missing two teeth, and her dark hair was matted and ratty.

What had time done to them?

Although she knew it wasn't the girl's fault, Eponine couldn't help feeling jealous of Cosette. She had gotten the happy ending, with plenty of food, a warm house, and a caring parent.

And Marius had fallen head over heels for Cosette.
Eponine pitied her clueless friend. She thought it was clear that the beautiful girl did not harbor any feelings for the lovesick boy, but Marius couldn't take a hint.

Nevertheless, Eponine had assisted the boy yet again.

As she pondered this, Eponine suddenly found herself near the home of Cosette. It was quite a beautiful home. There was a garden in the back with the prettiest flowers. While Marius helplessly declared his love for Cosette, she had stared at them. Now she found herself here again.

Eponine walked up and gripped the iron gate with both of her hands. It felt cold and hard in her grasp. The rain had ceased, but the night air still held its smell. Eponine breathed it in, letting the calm of the night soothe her. Then she looked up.

Cosette was sitting at the window, though she didn't see Eponine. Her golden hair hung loosely around her shoulders, shielding her face like a curtain. The girl was dressed in a pretty white nightgown, made of light material that slid down her arms, like a silk waterfall against the girl's smooth, unblemished skin.

Eponine gazed at the girl, feeling something in the pit of her stomach, something she couldn't quite place. All she knew was that it would be nice to look at Cosette, just look at her. She was so beautiful that Eponine was in awe.

Suddenly, as if she had sensed someone watching her, Cosette's head snapped up and caught sight of Eponine.
Her blue eyes shimmered brightly.

And Eponine was speechless.
