The engagement

It's now July I am standing in my dad's office as he wanted to see me. I am worried as to what it could be about. Even more, Maggie knocked on the door and comes in.

"Don't forget your conference call to Australia Sir".

" Thanks, Maggie. I wasn't. This won't take long".

"It just that the person has been waiting for you to get back to him".

" I am well aware of that Maggie".

"Sorry, Sir" and disappears again.

"Where was I?" replied my father. He looks at his desk for a folder. "I have a new assignment for you Bethan. Starting next month when the new guy gets here. I want you working for him. He has been working at our sister company in Sydney, Australia".

" What department?".

"Marketing department as his assistant".

" OK. Do I get to know who he is and when do I met him?" I ask.

"Soon".

How am I supposed to accept an offer if I do not know who's my boss is going to be.

"How long has he been working at the company in Sydney for?".

" Since February but they highly rate him. A very bright lad. I want him on our team. He has a very bright future here. As do you by his side".

"Can I find out who he is?".

" Not yet as it hasn't been finalised".

My father looks at his computer placed centrally on his huge oak desk. When he sits at that desk it always makes him superior. He has this presence when sitting behind that desk on that huge black leather chair of his. As a child, I hated going onto that office when I knew I was in trouble. Once again I feeling that same emotion. I can't help it, it just does.

"Bethan you are dismissed". I nod and went to leave just as my dad was talking to a guy. " I am sorry I didn't get back to you sooner".

I left the room before I could listen to any more of the conference call. I was wanting to know who I was working for. I guess some Australian guy. As I shut the door I look over at Maggie so hoping she knew something.

"Sorry, Bethan I know what you are thinking. Sorry, can't help you. Your father is that good in his business even I don't know what is going on. And I'm his assistant".

So it's all hush-hush then. So I am not going to know until next month when I start. Maggie carried on with her work. I am not going to get anything out of the two of them. I can't let this get to me as tonight Jon is taking me out for dinner as he has news. I don't need this over my head when Jon tells me about his news. But I have the rest of the working day with this on my head. Why won't my dad tell me who it is?. I soon forget all about it when I am in gross in work going through contracts and memos with Maggie. Even with my new assignment, I am still working alongside, my dad's, EA. My dad buzzed the com.

" Maggie, could you come into the office. I need you to write out a contract for the lad coming from Australia. There aren't any legal requirements as he is from here".

So the guy is American then. But I was soon made to forget my thoughts on this as I had a pile of work to go through. Nothing to do with my new boss. There was no contract here for him. I still don't know who he is.

Later the day Jon met up with me by my dad's office. I looked up from my seat into those hazel brown eyes. He stood there in his dark blue suit looking ever so handsome. I like a guy in a suit, I guess just as much if the was wearing jeans and a t-shirt.
