CHAPTER TWO
— The Empty Child—
❝I suppose you get by as long as a piece of wood doesn't get in the way.❞JESSICA RAN AFTER the Doctor as he followed Nancy across the train tracks to an abandoned train. The raven haired woman had no idea why she continued to follow him instead of trying to find her brother, who was still not answering her messages. He was obviously busy with something, otherwise he would have replied immediately. This blonde companion must really be something, though it didn't take much to enamour Captain Jack Harkness, he was a sucker for a blonde.
Nancy bent down and his some food in the compartments of the rusty train, gasping when she spotted the Doctor and Jess in the doorway. "How'd you follow me here?"
The Doctor grinned, "I'm good at following, me. Got the nose for it."
"People can't usually follow me id I don't want them to." She told him.
"My nose has special powers." He mused.
"Yeah? Is that why it's so..." Nancy trailed off from finishing her joke.
"What?"
"Nothin'." Nancy let an amused smirk cross her features as she and Jessica shared a look.
"What?"
"Nothin'." Nancy's smile grew wider, "Do your ears have special powers too?"
"What are you trying to say?" The Doctor questioned obliviously. Jessica let out a small chuckle, as she understood what the younger girl meant.
"Goodnight, Mister. Goodnight, Miss." Nancy voiced, turning around to leave.
"Nancy...there's something chasing you and the other kids. Looks like a boy and it isn't a boy. And it started about a month ago, right?" He said knowingly, Nancy looked back at him in confusion and so did Jess. Where was he going with this? "That thing I'm looking for. The thing that fell from the sky. That's when it landed. And you know what I'm talking about, don't you?"
"There was a bomb. A bomb that wasn't a bomb. Fell the other end of Limehouse Green Station."
"Take me there."
"She can't." Jessica cut in. "It's surrounded by soldiers and barbed wire. We can't get in."
"Try me!" The Doctor retorted.
"You won't like what you find, do you really want to find out what it is?" Jessica asked him. If that capsule had anything to do with that empty child, she really wanted to find out if she and her brother were to blame.
"I really wanna know." The Doctor confirmed.
"Then there's someone you need to talk to first." Nancy told them.
"And who might that be?" He questioned.
"The doctor."
Jessica scoffed a laugh at the irony and followed after the girl. The Doctor caught up with a few strides and soon they were on a hill overlooking the bomb site. Fences were surrounding the whole area, soldiers standing guard.
