"hey dillon." i heard callan say, we were in the car, heading to get somewhere to eat. we weren't talking much but, it was comfortable. it was better than just making something up to start conversation.
"yes?" i asked him, looking over to him in the drivers seat.
"i'm sorry i left you at the park." he said, taking me aback. i didn't really know what to say, a part of me thought we both were just going to forget that night even happened to, i was shocked that he was the one to bring it up.
"i didn't want to leave until you woke up but, my friend kept calling and calling and she needed me to pick her up. i didn't want to wake you up either because you looked so peaceful, for sleeping under a tree in a park, but, i guess maybe i should've now. and i was going to text you but, obviously i dont have your number." he rambled.
"hey, it's okay! seriously don't feel bad at all. i didn't even expect you to stay with me so, you did more than enough." i said, trying to calm him down and not make him feel guilty.
"well, i'm just glad that you're okay and like ya know, nothing bad happened or anything." he said, still sounding a bit nervous. i chuckled a little bit before responding to him.
"you do know that i am perfectly capable of taking care of myself callan, don't forget that." i said. his comment made me laugh slightly but, it's not like he knew any better.
"yeah i guess that's true, you're the only girl i've ever really talked too that can spend the night in a park and not be scared." he said. i know he wasn't implying that we were talking in a different way besides mostly friendly but, it still sounded quite weird coming from his mouth. and i think he noticed.
"i didn't mean like talking talking you know, it's just different. you're not like any other girl i've talked too." he finished, i was trying to think of how to respond but, he continued rambling before i could talk.
"again, not like in a flirty way you know?" he asked as he looked over at me, i was already looking at him with a small smile on my face, lightly laughing at his nerves. he just smiled back at me.
"i should just stop talking shouldn't i?" he asked me, with us still staring at each other smiling. it was kind of weird seeing him so nervous, lately he has been so outwardly flirty so, i was shocked to see him nervous suddenly.
"no no keep going, i wanna see what else you would say." i said, leaning into our stare a little bit in a teasing way. i saw his eyes flicker for a second to another part of my face before it quickly met my eyes again. i saw him bite his lip and he looked like he was going to say something when a car honked at us, causing us both to jump. we both pulled out of the contact and looked in front of us, i saw that we were at a stop sign and guess we were here for longer than needed. callan quickly started driving which, saved me from the embarrassment of him seeing my blushed cheeks. i laughed slightly as the silence fell upon us again.
"i was thinking about getting food to go, and then taking it back to my house, if that's okay with you." he said.
"yeah, that sounds great! where do you want to go?" i asked.
"do you like tacos?" he asked me.
"who doesn't?" i answered.
"perfect, i know just the place." he said as he made a quick turn into a parking lot where the restaurant was. it was one of those small food places where it just had a walk up order station and a drive through. callan pulled behind the small line to get to where we order.
"i've never heard of this place before." i said.
"it has the best queso i have ever had, we have to get some." he said, clearly getting excited about the melted cheese. the line went surprisingly fast and it was already our turn to order.
