Interviewer: I'm aderonkeakinlade from the Golden Writers Community. It's nice to have you here.
Would you please state the name you would love to be called in the course of this interview?
dee_mx : Mingxin
Interviewer: Okay Mingxin... Your readers are quite inquisitive of you.
Q: Can you please tell us a little about yourself?
A: I'm a student from Singapore, and I love reading and of course writing!! This story "Reret" is the first proper story I ever wrote and published, and I am a kind of new writer who wants to learn and grow to become a better writer!
Interview: Wow! Nice! I read your book "Regret" and I was really amazed with what I read. At first, I felt how can someone write a two part story even if it was a short story? But then reading it, I must commend you for a job well done.
Q: Behind every book, there are inspirations. So my question is, what brought about the inspiration for your book?
A: Ok, so this story actually came about because of a school assignment😅
I wanted to write about something that was unique, and was not like a normal boring school essay, so I decided on this plot and writing style. I wanted the story to be moving, emotional and intense.
The marks I got from the teacher was way below my expectations. Even though my friend liked it a lot, and those marks disappointed me, so I decided to improve based on my teacher's comments and write a better story with no plot holes and appropriate use of grammar and punctuation marks. Becayse of all these readers who commented and gave me feedbacks, it also made my short story the way it was today.
As for the plot inspiration, the plot was actually very different from the start, but it slowly changed and adapted to what it is today.
Interviewer: Amazing!!! Let's talk about the characters...
Q: The two characters, Elodie and Lauren. Can you tell us something we, the readers, still didn't get to know about them?
A: Well hmmm, you can tell from reading that the two have a very conflicted relationship. Lauren "hates" Elodie but we can see that somewhere deep in her heart that she stills cares about Elodie. Elodie on the other hand, is kind of the opposite.
She cares for Lauren and wants to be friends with her again, even though she knows that their relationship can never be mended, she still holds onto hope. However, over the years, Elodie has grown a hatred towards Lauren because of how miserable her life turned out to be, and how no one was there for her during the hardest times of her life. From this, you can see that their relationshop would never be mended, because it can't be.
Yeah and that was the exact effect I wanted to achieve on the readers. I wanted them to want to find out more or want these two girls to reconcile.
Q: Which character part did you find the most difficult to write? And why?
A: Well since there are only two characters 😂, I think it would be Lauren. Figuring out what part she would play in the story was very challenging, as you can see, the short story is more centred on Elodie and not Lauren. We only learn what Lauren is like through the words she speaks and her actions. I initially wanted her to kind of play the bully, sort of, but I didn't want to go to that cliche route. I wanted to depict the struggles of both Lauren and Elodie, but the story is written in Elodie's perspective so the only way to portray Lauren's thoughts and opinions are through the dialogue they have. I had to be extra careful and meticulous on what I wanted Lauren to say, and understanding Lauren's thoughts and behabiour was quite difficult for me. Even though I created the character.
