Part of Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes' lives as celebrities was to participate in causes that spoke to their hearts.  Both would frequently visit children's hospitals in cities they would tour in and it was always a bright spot in their lives and the children they met.  Seeing children so sick, fighting for their lives put a lot into perspective for each of them. Shawn and Camila had each done Make-A-Wish separately as children grew fond of their individual music and personalities.

It had been at least two years since they had seen each other.  Two years since Camila told him; finally, that she loved him.  She finally admitted to herself and to him that she had feelings for him far beyond just their flirtatious affair they had as young teens.  He had been waiting for years to hear her say those words to him because he knew his heart belonged to hers.  He loved her since that first day he saw her in the empty lot behind the tour buses.

So why did he run?  Why did he let her say those words he had been craving to hear from her, only to run away; like a coward.  The moment he heard those words was supposed to be the best day of his life; but for some reason he couldn't believe her.  He didn't want to.  He was so scared that he finally knew the truth and his anxiety crushed him in the moment as her beautiful chocolate brown pools locked with his.

He ran...  He literally ran away from her, through the crowded restaurant where they had shared a meal in a dimly lit, secluded room.  He remembers calling Cez, and his dad Manny.  Out of breath he remembers telling them what had happened and how he ran, he didn't know why; but he did and he didn't feel like he could take it back.

Meanwhile, Camila sat in a now empty room completely stunned as she sat there, tears streaming down her face.  She had finally told him her truth and she swore he felt the same.  She came to the conclusion after he sprinted out of the restaurant that he in fact, did not.  Swallowing back her tears, she called her friend Taylor and had her pick her up from the back entrance.

That was the last night she spoke to or of Shawn Mendes.  During interviews she dodged questions when they asked about their friendship, and at award shows and premieres, she made sure to walk to the carpet at a completely different time than him.  She used her friends as a buffer when they were in the same room together and if they were forced into any situation together, all that was shared was a simple smile.

Nothing more.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello were not friends.  It was as if their friendship, their flirtatious demeanor around each other never existed.

He watched from the sidelines as she rose to a higher stardom than even she anticipated and she watched as he threw himself at one girl to the next.

He was crushed when he found out that she was seeing someone serious.  He deeply regretted running that night.  He didn't feel like he was allowed to love her anymore.  His heart stung at the tabloids that reported she was getting married and babies were in the near future.

That should have been him.  He should've been the one she was marrying and starting a family with.  They were soulmates, even though he was the one that messed it all up.

About a year later, news had broken that Camila's fiancé had dumped her on a romantic getaway to Santorini.  Pap photos of her coming home on a plane to Miami looking like she hadn't ate or slept in months filled his timeline.  He was heartbroken for her, and although he was glad she was single now, he knew he couldn't just go to her and tell him how big of a coward he was or how big of a mistake he had made leaving her in that restaurant that night those years ago.  He had reached out to her mother, who even after everything, he still kept in contact with.  Sinu told him that she was hurting, but he wasn't the one she wanted to pick up the pieces.  Sinu warned him to give Camila some time because she knew deep down, her daughter loved him still and maybe, one day, she'd come around.
