The moon is large and round in the sky tonight. Though they already turned off the light, everything in the room can still be clearly seen. The two were squeezed into one bed. Gu Hai slept next to the window, and he can see the moon hanging above the treetops just by lifting his head a little.
"It'll be the Mid-Autumn Festival in two days," Bai Luo Yin mused out loud.
(T/N: The Mid–Autumn Festival, also known as Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a traditional festival celebrated by many East and Southeast Asian people. The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar with a full moon at night, corresponding to mid-September to early October of the Gregorian calendar. On this day, the Chinese believe that the moon is at its brightest and fullest size, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of Autumn.)
Gu Hai's gaze drifted to land on Bai Luo Yin. His face was half-lit by the moon, the other half in shadows, the moonlight softening the lines of his face. His usually cold and sharp eyes have relaxed, the frequency of his blinks decreasing as well. Most of the time, he quietly stared at a corner of the room.
"Why did our homeroom teacher look for you today?"
"How does your family celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival?"
"..."
They asked the questions at the same time, resulting in an awkward atmosphere between them.
As Gu Hai waited for Bai Luo Yin to answer, he tried to come up with an answer to Bai Luo Yin's question. He has discovered that hiding one's identity is actually a very difficult thing to do. There's this saying "tell a lie and you'll have to tell countless lies to cover up the first one," which perfectly describes his current plight. Gu Hai is scared that one day he'll mess up and gets found out by Bai Luo Yin. If he tells the truth then, it definitely wouldn't end well for him.
Besides, it's not like he can hide here for his whole life.
Even if he doesn't go to Gu Wei Ting, Gu Wei Ting would definitely think of a way to get him back. If he doesn't resist, then his identity would be exposed immediately. But if he does resist and the whole situation becomes the talk of the town, then his identity would be exposed even more thoroughly.
No matter which path he chooses, they all end in a dead-end.
He needs to earn Bai Luo Yin's trust as quickly as possible and form an indestructible and life-changing friendship with him. Then, he can slowly tell Bai Luo Yin the truth.
"My family never celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival. At most, we would buy a couple of mooncakes."
Bai Luo Yin looked at Gu Hai out of the corner of his eye. He has noticed that Gu Hai carries himself in a particular way that a person from a poor and ordinary family wouldn't be able to emulate.
Gu Hai turned around and propped his head up with an arm, looking at Bai Luo Yin with interest.
"How does your family celebrate?"
Bai Luo Yin gave a faint smile, "We just eat some mooncake."
Gu Hai saw Bai Luo Yin's smile. He must really love eating mooncakes.
"Which kind of mooncake filling do you like to eat?"
"Egg yolk and lotus seed paste."
"Why do you like eating that kind of filling?" Gu Hai conveyed his bewilderment, "If you want something sweet, they're not sweet, but if you want something salty, they're also not salty. They're a bore to eat."
Bai Luo Yin gave Gu Hai a look, "Then what kind of filling do you like to eat? Let me hear it."
"Ribbonfish filling."
