A few days later, Jesse's surgery was getting closer and closer. They were laying in bed, Jesse sound asleep. He had had two more episodes since the last one, thankfully the nitroglycerin patches Abbey had been keeping on his chest was keeping his chest pain from intensifying and she was able to inject the adenosine in his veins quickly to get his heart back in rhythm quickly but the fatigue had overtaken Jesse. He had been sleeping more often than not. Abbey was not complaining, at least when he was sleeping, he was peaceful, he wasn't in pain or uncomfortable, and she knew it was what his body needed.
Plus, the last several days Abbey was more tired and exhausted than she had ever felt. She had been getting headaches and she had been getting nauseous off and on throughout the last several days. She figured though it was the worst time ever for her to get a virus or a mild case of the flu, that that must be what was happening. She had not told Jesse and did not want him to know. Because if he knew, she knew he would think it was because she had taken on the role of being his personal caretaker 24/7 the last nearly 2 weeks and would think it was his fault that she had started to get sick. And it wasn't, so she just didn't want him to know. She had worked sick before, many times working double shifts and working with little to no sleep so this was nothing. She would be fine and her main concern was Jesse.
She was just ready for Jesse to have his surgery and put this behind him. She didn't mind taking care of him at all, she just wanted to be able to bring him home with a new and improved fully functioning heart where he didnt have any more episodes of chest pain and shortness of breath. She loved him so much that she hated seeing him in pain and not being able to breath. She was a Dr, and a trauma surgeon at that, she came from a law enforecement family, Abbey could handle high stress situations with the best of them, she learned that from her father, a police officer of over 40 years, but when it came to Jesse, it was a completely different story. When it came to someone you loved, the cases became so personal.
Abbey opened her eyes and turned her head to look over at Jesse who lay sleeping comfortably. She smiled when she saw his face. He looked completely comfortable and peaceful, not in any pain. Other than the nasal cannula in his nose and wrapped around his face, and the IV port secured to the back of his left hand, you wouldn't be able to tell that Jesse was sick at all. I'm fact, he was as handsome and sexy as always. He hadn't shaved in several days, and his beard had grown back in. That was what Abbey loved so much about when Chicago PD was on summer hiatus, the "hiatus beard" would grow in and Abbey loved Jesse like that.
Abbey began to lean forward to softly kiss him, but just as she did the nausea set in again. Abbey quickly got out of bed and ran to their adjourned bathroom. She knelt down to the toilet, raised the toilet lid, and emptied the contents of her stomach.
Shit this is the worst possible time to get sick Abbey thought to herself.
After a few minutes, Abbey leaned forward and flushed the toilet. She mustered up the strength to raise herself off of the floor and stand up. She walked over to the sink and held onto the vanity for a minute.
Great, now add lower backache to everything. She complained to herself.
She turned on the faucet and rinsed out her mouth.
"Babe?" She heard Jesse calling from the bedroom.
She looked up at herself in the mirror as Jesse called again.
"Baby?""Yeah honey I'll be right there!"
Abbey gripped the edges of the vanity and looked back at herself in the mirror. She hoped Jesse wouldnt notice how pale she was. She was honestly fine other than the nagging headaches and the damn nausea that would come and go. It was worse when she woke up and would gradually lessen as the afternoon went by, and now the lower back pain .She splashed water on her face and turned the faucet off.
Abbey walked out of the bathroom and was leaning on the door frame in between the bedroom and bathroom to see Jesse sitting up propped up on his elbows, the sheets right at his waistline, showing off his bare chest.
"Hey honey how are you feeling?"
She asked him."I'm ok" he said smiling over at her. "Are you ok?"
"Yeah I'm good. I just need to brush my teeth. I'll be right back ok?"
He nodded.
"Ok"
Abbey went back into the bathroom to brush her teeth and came back a few minutes later. She walked over to the other side of the bed, the side Jesse was laying on and helped prop him back up on the pillows. She leaned down and softly kissed him. He brought his other hand up holding her face as he passionately kissed her. She pulled away from him smiling as she picked up his wrist to check his pulse. She looked over at his oxygen concentrator and saw it read 100.0
"You're at 100%. We can take this off now for a while. "
She gently removed his oxygen cannula. She checked his blood pressure then listened to his heart. He watched her intensely as she listened.
"How is it? It's getting worse isn't it?"
"You only have a few more days and everything will be fine. It will be like a new heart once everything is repaired" she said as she took her stethoscope off.
He watched her as she changed out the nitroglycerin patch on his chest. He brought his hand up to cup her cheek.
"You look tired"
"I'm fine Jesse"
"Come back to bed"
She smiled brightly at him.
"That sounds like a wonderful idea actually"
Abbey walked over to her side of the bed and got in and crawled over to Jesse, placing her body right up against his, entangling her legs with his, she turned her body where she was lying on her side facing him, he wrapped his arm around her back, she brought her arm up to as he turned his head to face her and wrapped her arm around his head, their faces touching.
"I love you" Jesse told her.
"I love you too"
They both closed their eyes just taking in each other's presence. Their love for each other was just so intense at times they just had to take it in.
"We're going to get through this" she whispered.
Jesse just nodded his head as they both drifted back to sleep in each other's arms.

Okay guys I am so sorry this update took so long. This is the longest I've gone between updates since I started this story. I've had a lot going on the last few days and not as much overall time to write. I've tried to write little by little but I was having problems with Wattpad and it kept deleting my progress so I literally wrote this chapter like a dozen times.
Also this is pretty much a filler chapter but if you read carefully, there's a few hints that will be discussed in later chapters. I promise the next few chapters will get it rolling again.
Wanted to get this one out by tonight and I'll try to have a few more chapters up in the next few days
Thanks for reading!!
