Abbey was helping Jesse into bed. She had him lay on her usual side of the bed closer to the bathroom so his left side would be towards the edge of the bed not the middle. She had brought out extra pillows and propped them behind his head, and pulled up the covers. The pain meds were already making him groggy. She was stuffing a few pillows under his left arm and shoulder. She sat on the edge of the bed and picked up his wrist to feel his pulse.
"I'm fine babe. My heart is fine. It's Just a few scrapes"
She smiled amusingly at him.
"Yeah and a dislocated shoulder. " She layed his wrist back down by his side. "Just checking."
She stood up and bent down to kiss him gently.
"Get some rest sweetheart.
He grabbed her arm.
"Paddy has Jaylee?"
"Yeah she's with Paddy. She's fine."
"Stay with me"
She smiled down at him. When she first met Jesse, he was so independent and didn't like to depend on anyone for their help or assistance. He's come a long way since his heart condition was first diagnosed. So she loved it when he admitted that he wanted her in those type of situations. That he was allowing her to take care of him.
She sat back down on the edge of the bed and ran her fingers softly through his hair. His eyes were closed and his breathing was evening out. She continued to softly play with his hair because she knew it kept him calm."Do you remember the first time you ended up in my emergency department?" She playfully asked him.
He grinned and nodded his head, with his eyes still closed.
"Yep. Like I could ever forget that. Totally worth the 30 stitches. I lucked out."
"I don't know. I'd say I got pretty damn lucky too" She said remembering that day, not even being able to imagine what would have happened had Jesse not ended up in the Emergency Department that day.
-----------------------------------------------------------
August 2019Abbey had just started her shift in the Emergency Department at Rush University Medical Center. By the looks of the board, things had been slow. She had hoped things would stay that way but by the way her week had been so far, she probably wasn't that lucky. She was having to fill in tonight and work an overnight shift which the entire shift would be pure overtime for her.
The ED chief, approached the ED desk to make an announcement to the Drs and nurses standing around.
"There was an accident on the Chicago PD set, involving one of its lead stars. Apparantly he does his own stunts on the show and he collided with the hood and windshield of a car. So Dr Cooper I want you leading this one. Only the best professionalism and care which I know i can depend on you. Pick your team."
Abbey nodded. "Of course, Chief. Who is it?"
"Jesse Lee Soffer is his name. At the very least he'll need sutures and fluids. Make sure you cross every t and dot every i. Run all the necessary tests. " she said as she walked off.
"Ok I'll take at least 2 nurses. Any volunteers" Abbey asked the 8 nurses standing in front of her whom every single of them raised their hands. Abbey gave a puzzled lock. "Uh okay Leah and Lexi. I'll let y'all know if I need anything else. Thanks guys."
The other nurses went off in opposite directions.
"Alright who is this guy?"
Both Lexi and Leah looked at her incredulously.
