Prologue
Velletri, Italy, June 20th 1904
The night had begun to settle with the moon slowly setting in the west, the sky drifts from its charcoal color to a soft blue-grey, with hues of purple and pink. The sun rises in the horizon, bringing the promise of a new day, with its golden color overpowering the dawn sky.
In the middle of a clearing, atop a cliff overlooking a small Italian village, a young women stood tall over looking the burning chaos below her. Cottages were burning, bodies lay strewn across the fields, children screamed, men screamed, woman screamed. They were her neighbors, family, friends, they were the ones who didn't leave quick enough, the one who didn't escape from the attack that hit them in the middle of the night. The ones she couldn't save.
The woman closed her eyes, the sounds of the screams ringing in her ears. She could sense someone enter the clearing behind her, and she hugged the small bundle in her arms closer to her chest, protecting the baby she held from the ongoing war that would soon end.
She turned around to face the man who was making his way toward her. "Alfredo." She breathed in relief, "Grazie per l'incontro con me." As the man got closer to her he flashed her smile, showing off his sharp teeth.
"Yes, yes, I haven't got all day. What is it you want from me?"
"You said you have been watching over my family for years." The man nodded, waiting for her to continue. "I hope you will continue to do that."
"I made a vow centuries ago. I'm a man of my word. I keep my promises, girl."
"Then you'll take my son. Find him a good family that will care for him."
"And why would I do that, dear?"
"He's needs a new – better – family. I won't be here by tomorrow."
"I suppose you and your sister have made a decision then." He asked nonchalantly, knowing the decision made would cost the woman in front of him her life. He may have promised to look after the family but their existence was not that important to him.
"We have." The young women nodded and handed over the small baby. "We just need to say goodbye and then my mate will handle the rest."
"And he is fine with this?"
"He doesn't have a choice." She ignored the raised eyebrow and confused look from the man. "I did what I needed to do, the plan is already in motion. By tomorrow this will all be over. No one will have to go through this ever again."
"And you believe that this war will end just by killing one man?"
"He is far from being a man. He is a monster. And yes, I have faith in my mate. And the pack has made an alliance with Alpha Bay in New York. An alliance will be made with our kind and the humans. We shall all live in peace."
"I do pray that you are right."
"I know I am." She spoke in confidence before giving one last longing look to her newborn child and walking away.
