Chapter 14 : Despondency

“This is not fair to my baby!” Emily Saunders' voice emanated from Mr. Glass' office. Esmeralda sighed from her seat outside of the office and dropped her head into her hands.

Why did this have to happen?

She started to imagine all the harsh and disgusted looks she would get as soon as she stepped foot onto that school's property. Their was an alliance made between the humans and other supernatural species and they all lived in peace, but that did not mean their was much hospitality.

“I'm sorry, Esmeralda.” Turning her head, Esmeralda met the boy's sincere gaze and nodded sadly.

“It's okay, I guess.”

“Exactly, just be positive. Everything will be fine.” Ian told her, wrapping a comforting arm around her shoulders, as he sat next to her.

“Be positive. Got it.”

The office door opened, and their heads shot up to meet the teary eyes of Esmeralda's mother. “I'm so sorry, baby. Come, come. We'll talk.” She mumbled, grabbing her arm and pulling her away.

The ride home was quiet, the tension was thick in the air. But, as soon as the family got into the house Esmeralda spoke. She couldn't keep quiet, she needed to know.

“So, now what?”

“I kill the Alpha, and we run like fugitives.” Her dad muttered in anger.

“Damn straight we'd be running like fugitives, John. You can't just kill someone with that much respect and power and get away with it. It'd be like killing the President. Or worse.” Emily spoke annoyed.

“What the hell are we supposed to do Emily?” John snapped. “We can't just send her to that damn school! It's a disaster waiting to happen! It's not like her mate is there to protect her! Because he's bloody 19!”

As her mother yelled back at her father, continuing their harsh bickering, Elle felt her eyes tear up.

And even though she felt like she hated him at the moment, she couldn't help but imagine his calming voice, and gentle touch.

“Stop it! Please!” She yelled desperately and both of their heads snapped in her direction, shame written across their features. “I'll go, its no big deal. Sarah and Josh go there anyway and the college is on the campus across the road. So I can see Logan at lunch or whatever. Just please, stop fighting.” After apologizing to their daughter, they started to tell her about their conversation with Mr. Glass and what would happen.

Half an hour later, there was a knock on the door, and Esmeralda went to answer it.

Opening the door slowly, she prayed that it wasn't Logan, but yet at the same time she was still disappointed to find Sarah at her doorstep instead of him.

“Hi.” She smiled, weakly.

“Hi.”

“Can I come in?”

“Yeah, sure, sure.” She replied, taking a step back to let her inside. Leading her into the living room she sat down and turned towards her.

Sarah stood near the window, gazing out at the street. “I heard about what happened.” She admitted softly. “Logan came home in a state, and a few hours later we were informed that you'd be attending the supernatural school. It's not fair and I'm sorry that this is happening to you.”

“I appreciate that, Sarah, I really do. But, why did you really come here?”

“I wanted to talk to you about mates.”

Why? Why did everyone seem to want to talk about that. Why did I always hear that word?

I am fifteen for crap sakes. I'm too young for soul mates and moving in and love.

“I have a mate.” Sarah blurted suddenly in a longing, sad voice.

“I didn't know that.”

“No, that's because no one does.”

“What do you mean? I thought werewolves were pretty open about that stuff.”

“No one knows because he rejected me, Elle.”

“He. . .what?”

“He didn't want me. He didn't want to be with me. He wants someone better.”

“I -”

“I don't want your pity, Elle.”

“I don't pity you.” She told her, shaking her head, and Sarah turned to stare at the girl with curious eyes. “Trust me, I know how much you don't want anyone's pity, it's awful. But, I am concerned, and I do feel sorry. Part of me even feels guilty.”

“Good. . . because you have a mate, and your pushing him away. I know Logan can be an ass, trust me I do, I've lived with him for years now, but I also know what its like to have your mate push you away, and I would never wish that on anyone.”

“And here I thought you would be different.” Esmeralda spoke quietly and stood from her seat.

“Wait. . .Esmeralda I don't want you to think I'm telling you to just forget about what you feel and be with Logan. I understand that you feel as if no one is thinking about you right now. What I mean to say is that you should open yourself up to him more.”

“I am!”

“More. Open yourself more. More than just being his friend. You'll find that that is what you've wanted all along.” Esmeralda nodded silently, not sure what to say. In all honesty, she wanted to, she really did, but she guessed she was just scared. “Did he tell you about the . . . ritual, for lack of better word.”

“Yeah, a little bit. I freaked out.” Mentally she slapped herself as soon as she heard the words spoken. I'm a terrible person.

“Before my parents died they told me about it. I was seven at the time, but I remember every word to this day, because in all honesty I couldn't wait to experience the kind of love my parents shared. They told me short and simple about mates and what happened when you found them. They said that “the kiss was for the emotion. The bite is for the bond. And the mating is for the invincibility. Not just the strength in both partners, but the bond between two mates that could never be broken.” There was that, but then there's your mate. And your mate, “your mate is and always will be the air you breathe, the love, the comfort, the joy, that one bright start in the sky, your world. The reason your floating on cloud nine.” I'm probably not going to get the chance to experience that, Elle, but I want everyone else to get that chance.”

“I understand, Sarah. I do. I'll talk to Logan tommorow. I – I just can't right now.”

“I understand. As long you talk to him.”

“I promise, thank you.

Talking to Sarah definately helped alot. Even though others were being unfair, Esmeralda realized she was also being unfair. I guess I was kind of being a hypocrite in a way.

“So. . . I guess, I'll talk to you later? I should probably get home, I didn't tell Elena I was leaving. She'll freak.” Sarah laughed as she started walking away.

Esmeralda followed behind her, “Thanks for coming over to talk to me, Sarah. I relly appreciate it.” She smiled, and opened the door, freezing as she saw a familiar black car in her drive way and a distraught looking Logan next to it.
