Haydens POV:
Finally. Someone knew my story. The whole truth, and they didn't run away. Maybe now I could finally belong somewhere and one day to someone. But my first concern and worry is Jack. I wonder if he's made any new friends at school.
Sara and I are just sitting here together looking out at everything just looking at nothing but everything. Admiring the beauty and simplicity of the beaches in the distance. The sun was high in the sky and man it was hot today. I smile to myself. Everything's normal for a change.
"Hey do you wanna go to the beach? I mean we're excused for the rest of the day, right? C'mon I can finally teach you how to surf!" She's so excited to teach me how to surf that I can't help but laugh and give in.
"Sure, we'll take my bike and spend the day there?" I grin at her face when I mention my bike. She looks like a kid on Christmas day. "Let's go."
We head down the stairs back into the school and down the corridors towards the main doors, as we pass classrooms we just laugh at them and make goofy faces. When we come to the last class I notice Fox and Bain together bickering over a work sheet. I laugh out loud and they snap their heads in my direction. I just smile, wink and wave as I continue walking.
We get to my bike and I pull out the spare helmet Jack uses and hand it to Sara. I pull my own helmet on, mount my bike and roar it to life. Sara jumps on, I pull out of the school parking lot towards the beach Sara directs me to. We make it there within 5 minutes and pull into the parking lot. We lock our helmets in the seat compartment with our bags and head for the water.
Sara walks over to a wooden shed and pulls out two boards and roots around some boxes and pulls out two wet suits and two bikinis. She drags everything over to me. "Here, these are all my old stuff we can use today. You can use the shed to change first."
"Thanks." I call as I head towards the shed. I strip my clothes and pull the bikini on and the wet suit up to my waist and just let it hang. I fold my clothes and place them neatly on the counter and head out so Sara can change. She notices my tattoos but doesn't say anything. Well not yet anyway.
When she's done we grab a board and head towards the water, and she shows me what to do and how to do it and after a few tries I finally get the hang of it and we're surfing together laughing our heads off and having a good time. After some time we just sit on the boards and watch the waves come and go.
"So I saw your tattoos... Can I ask what they stand for?"
I shrug and just reply "Sure I mean, they're not a secret but some of them I don't like talking about but since you know everything now I might as well... Obviously 'Jack' on the back of my neck is for my brother." I say as I unzip the wet suit and pull it down to my waist and point to my ribs. "And this says 'Fight for you and fight hard' I got this because well I'm a fighter and I learned pretty early on that not many people will fight for you so you gotta do it yourself you know?"
She nods to let me know she understands what I'm talking about. I hold out my right arm. "This was made from tattoo parlours from every place me and Jack have been together. A momento you know? To show where I've been and where I've come from."
I turn my back to her and pull the wet suit down a bit more to show my lower back. "Now this one, was a quote from my best friend Clark. 'People change for the better and for the worst, but they will thrive either way.' He was the wisest person I had ever met! Although he was the person who got me into fighting in the first place, he knew we needed the money and he provided the solution."
Sara picks up on when I use 'was' and questions, "Was? Is-is he dead? And what are the wings around it for?" The innocent question brought tears to my eyes just thinking about Clark. I take a deep breath and just stare out towards the horizon.
"Yeah he died. Trying to save me. He-he took a bullet that was meant for me. That's what the wings are for. Angel wings. He was my guardian angel. That's what he always joked he was. So I thought what better way to remember him than one of his sayings inside angel wings?" I sniffle and laugh thinking back to my life with Clark and how bad things actually are.
"Oh and my last one is for Clark too just simply his name with boxing gloves hanging from his name on my thigh here." I point to my left leg and she just smiles.
"I'm sure he appreciates the gesture and knows that you think of him everyday Hayden. I'd love to get a tattoo one day!" She gets all excited about the thought of a tattoo. I catch her looking at all my tattoos again when she thinks I'm not looking, but when I lift my right arm to pull my hair out of my face she freezes and just stares, that's when I realize she's spotted the scar, from a bullet. Yup. I was shot.
