Rosa stands on the roof of the precinct building, lost in thought as she stares at the city below her. She shivers as the cold evening air grazes the back of her neck. She was up there for what felt like hours, taking in the comfortable silence, before she was interrupted by the creak of the door. She turns her head to see Gina standing across the way.
"I thought you might want a jacket," Gina says timidly while walking closer to Rosa. "And maybe some company?"
Rosa gestures for her to come closer. "Thanks, Gi," she replies reaching out to take the jacket from Gina's arms.
Gina hands the jacket to Rosa, lightly grazing her hand as she does so. The feeling of Gina's skin against hers makes Rosa's heart race. The brief contact is electrifying and leaves them both wanting more. Without saying a word, they both slowly outstretch their hands until their fingers are intertwined. They inch closer together until they are side by side with practically no space between them. They stand like this for a while, feeling the warmth of each other's palms, until Rosa breaks the silence.
"Gina, I..." she trails off, too afraid to vocalize the thoughts that are racing through her mind.
"Yeah, Ro?" Gina swivels around so that she and Rosa are facing each other, and looks up at Rosa with those deep blue eyes.
Gina's soft gaze gives Rosa the courage to say what's on her mind.
"Gi, I'm in love with you," she says confidently, running a hand through the woman's auburn locks.
Gina looks down and chuckles. "I know, Ro. I know," she smiles softly, looking into Rosa's gentle brown eyes. She places a hand on her cheek and leans in to initiate a kiss.
Rosa leans in, but instead of being met by the sensation of Gina's soft lips against hers, she is met with the blaring of her alarm.
Rosa's eyes open and her heart plummets. She groans and rolls over to hit snooze on her alarm. Rosa shifts onto her back and stares up at her bedroom ceiling for a few moments, trying to send her mind back to the place it had gone in the dream. She'd felt so alive, so safe, so close to Gina. The thought of Gina caressing her face lit her heart on fire. But reality faded back in, and Rosa knew things would never be the way they were in her dream. Reluctantly, she pulls herself out of bed and readies herself for work.
Rosa arrives at the precinct on time, and Gina arrives about an hour and a half later. Her late arrivals had become more frequent over the past two weeks or so. Rosa focuses on her work as fully as possible, but still, her mind drifts to the dream. How could it feel so real? How could she be so ridiculously in love with someone who could never know how she felt? Rosa stands up from her desk and heads toward the bathroom. She'd decided she would give herself a pep talk and splash some water in her face so she could really concentrate on working for the next few hours.
But on her way to the restroom, she is distracted by a faint noise coming from inside a supply closet. She leans against the door and listens, recognizing the sound of soft sobs coming from inside. She reaches for the handle and carefully opens the door, revealing a figure huddled in the corner of the small room.
"Gina?"
