Ahh thank you for 1.5k reads on this already!!!

We all got our schedules handed out and the first day at Hogwarts began. Since neither Harry, nor Ron succeeded their O.W.L.S. enough to pass Potions, they had a free period. So, while they were gawking at everyone else in the halls, I went off to potions.

Professor Slughorn had lined up a series of potions at the front of the class. One by one he went down them, asking people what it was. Slughorn pointed to a steaming cauldron. Hermione's hand shot up, as per usual.

"This is Amortentia, the world's most powerful love potion. It is distinctive for its mother-of-pearl sheen, and steam rises from the potion in spirals. Amortentia smells different to each person, according to what attracts them." Hermione stated.

"Perfect, 10 points to Gryffindor, now can someone tell me what they smell?" Slughorn asked.

"Me." Tewkesbury and Edmund both spoke up.

"Well, well both of you step up now." Slughorn said. They both went up to the cauldron.

"I smell...vanilla..." Edmund started.

"With a hint of blossom..." Tewkesbury added.

"And the fresh fragrance of the ocean..." Edmund continued.

"And the wave of the autumn wind." Tewkesbury said.

"Altogether, it smells like the transition between Summer and Fall, fresh and sweet." Edmund smiled.

Slughorn looked between them. "Wow, it uh- seems you both have similar-um sensory smells that make you attracted to someone." He said, ushering them back to their seat. I looked down at my feet, slightly embarrassed at what just happened.

They both smelled me. Was that even possible?

"Now, to give perhaps a girl a chance to smell?" Lots of hands went up. I kept mine down. "Hmm...maybe....ah Miss Y/L/N, I knew your parents, you know, wonderful students, powerful too. What do you smell here?" Why is it that teachers always picked the person without their hand up?

I walked up to the cauldron, anxious. This would tell me what my heart had so much trouble figuring out. I took a long whiff, sighing slightly at the sweet fragrance. "I smell fresh snow, crisp and clear. There is also the sweet hint of pine, and I can smell a distant crackle of fire, and maybe ginger-"

The door swung open and Ron and Harry walked through.

"Ah you're late, but nonetheless here, come join us." Slughorn invited them in.

"Sir, we haven't got the chance to get the textbook-"

"No worries, m'boy just find them in the cabinet." Slughorn assured. I walked back to my seat, thankful for the interruption. I knew exactly who I smelled, and both Edmund and Tewkesbury knew too. I looked up and saw Tewkesbury, who clenched his jaw so hard, I could see his muscles flex in his cheek. Edmund on the other hand, smiled softly, blushing, and looking down at the floor.

Slughorn instructed us to work on a potion named Felix Felicis, or liquid luck. This was also the potion that would be given to whoever made the best potion at the end of class. I looked over at Draco, whose interest was suddenly piqued. He looked back as we both thought the same thing. We both could use the help in our tasks.

So, once told to begin, I quickly grabbed all my ingredients. Harry came to work beside me. His copy of potions book was rough, tattered, and had marking written all over it. Harry sighed as he bent down to make out the words.

The potion proved to be more difficult than most potions that I attempted before. I had so much trouble, plus the heat from all the bubbling made the air thick and heavy, and even harder to work in.
