The next day, I headed out with Armin, Jean, and Mikasa back to Trost to grab some supplies, I walked with Armin for a little bit of the walk. Jean walked in front of us with Mikasa, he kept looking back at us, I shot him a glare every time he looked. I was mad at him, he didn't get to say things like that to me and not get away with it. He had to apologize or at least sit with the uncomfortableness of it all for a bit. I looked down at the ground as I walked, "Jenny, please, can you just talk to me?" I looked up and saw Jean walking on the other side of me. I looked over at Armin and he nodded, "just hear him out Jenny, our squad isn't going to work without trust in each other, we can't afford to be mad at each other right now"

"Okay," I said, I looked over at Jean who looked awkwardly toward Armin, "Armin do you mind giving us a few moments?" I asked him, he nodded and jogged forward to join Mikasa. Jean and I walked in silence for a few moments, I heard Jean take a deep breath, "look, Jenny, I'm sorry for what I said, I crossed a line back there, I was just upset,"

"Butthurt because a girl saved you?" I asked him, he let out a breathy laugh, "you could say that I guess, but I think I just always saw me saving you and not the other way around" he said, he wrapped his arm around mine as we walked, "what I mean is I thought I would be strong enough to protect myself and I want to be strong enough to protect not only me but you too," he said, I looked over at him and we made eye contact, he brushed a stray hair out of my face, his fingers lingered on my face for a second. Then Jean slid his arm around my shoulder, "you're really special Jenny, not just to me and not just because of who you are" I smiled a little but then I remembered who I was. I took a deep breath in, "thanks Jean, it really means a lot, I have been having a lot of trouble, there are times when I feel like I don't belong and you definitely struck a nerve last night but that means a lot, thank you, and you mean a lot to me too"

"I'm also having a lot of trouble morally with this whole thing," Jean said, I nodded along, "I don't like the idea of hurting people, I joined to save people not hurt them," Jean smiled, I crossed my hand over my body and laced my fingers with his, "well to be fair I joined to live in the barracks of the Military Police but after Marco, I decided I needed to do something and save people not just myself" I looked up at him, "who's Marco?" I had never heard him talk about Marco before.

I felt his arm tense up, "have I not told you about Marco? I'm surprised Sasha or Armin haven't mentioned him either" Jean trailed off, and I shook my head, "Marco was my best friend, he was the nicest person I had ever met, incredibly smart and hardworking, we both wanted to join the Military Police, we made it into the top ten together, we were going to join, then the attack on Trost happened," I stared into Jean's eyes as he told the story, he was looking down at the ground, "we fought together, he saved me but after the battle, we were cleaning the city and" he started to stutter and his eyes brimmed with tears. I held his hand tighter and started to rub my thumb against his hand, he seemed comforted by this, but it didn't make it any easier, "and I found his body, there was only half of him left, his eye was wide open, he was gone"

We continued to walk, my jaw dropped, Jean was obviously holding back tears, I held his hand as we walked. His tension brought my body closer to his so our sides were touching, "Jean, I'm so sorry" I said, he nodded, "thank you, Jenny, it means a lot, it really does," I felt his lips press against my head, I dropped his hand and shot away from him. We stopped walking, I looked at him stunned, "what was that?" I asked him, he shook his head, "I don't know I just felt like I wanted to kiss you on the forehead at that moment, your head was just right there, right within reach and I really like you, Jenny, I do," I shook my head and kept walking, I walked a little bit faster than Jean so we wouldn't be side by side, Jean followed me as I followed Armin and Mikasa. We walked in silence and I tried to figure out how I felt about what Jean had said. Luckily it wasn't too far until we hit the wall, we snuck inside with a group of merchants who were also getting into the wall. Armin, Mikasa, and I put our hoods on, Jean found a hat nearby and stole it, and placed it on his head.
